RE: Does having affiliates hurt seo?
thanks mat
i doubt google could ever do anything about it because so many legit sites get 50%+ of their business from their affiliates - and seems like every website has a banner of some sort linking to another site as an affiliate so i think a large percentage of the actual internet is affiliate marketing based
im sure more sites exist for the sole purpose of making an affiliate buck than actual company sites - literally every blog makes money as an affiliate in some manner or another
but thanks for the answer - i will do the site: search now

Does having affiliates hurt seo?
one of my clients has a TON of affiliates out there building links back to his site all with the ?ref=AFFILIATENAME tracking string
does google understand this and not count these links or is there a way to nofollow all links with this tracking string?
just wondering how big companies rank well and still have thousands of affiliates building links on all kinds of properties using all kinds of methods
thanks

RE: Does this software exist?
just to be clear i want to type in a url and be told what kw's rank and in what position
so like a mining tool that can search google for all the times a certain url ranks and then return to me how they rank and with what kw's and which positions

Does this software exist?
I am looking for an auto-detect type software that will tell me all the keywords that my site ranks for (say in top 50) without me having to actually manually enter 1000 kw's and wait for their ranks to populate
seomoz tells me that my site has 1000 organic search visits but only 200 from the kw's i entered in manually - so seomoz has to know which the other kw's are right?
anyway if anyone knows of a software like i am looking for please let me know
thanks

RE: Blocked by robots
i'm happy for all the help so i'm not complaining here but i think you forgot about me paul.
also i need to know why my client is so adamant about not wanting to upgrade his php from 5.1.6 to 5..2.4 saying it could hinder his sites overall functionality. any idea why?
i want to update his WP to newest version and it requires php to be updated so we are running old plugins and old WP - his blog was hacked so his webguys moved the location from site.com/blog to blog.site.com
i feel handcuffed - no reason to run WP if you cant use plugins right?

What problems could arise from updating php version?
i havent really gotten a straight answer yet for this question - my client says:
"The developers are skeptical about the possibility to update PHP on our server as this could seriously damage the entire RV site functionality."
since i know nothing about php and any potential hazards i have to ask the community to see if there is any validity to these concerns.
we cant update our version of WP unless the version of php is first upgraded from 5.1.6 to 5.2.4
client wont do this because developers say its a potential nightmare
i , as seo, want a current updated version of WP for many obvious reasons
can anyone please tell me what, if any, problems could arise from upgrading the sites php? or is it just a lot of work and the developers are making excuses because they dont want to do it?
thanks very much to whoever answers

RE: Does google penalize for banner ads?
thanks marie - thats what i needed to hear

Does google penalize for banner ads?
client has banners on site 1 linking to site 2 and vice-versa but these links are auto generated with each blog post ( new post means new ad link)
is this a problem?
see, its not like he just has one banner on reach site pointing back to the other - his ads automatically appear on each page that a blog post is posted - im sure you know what i mean but im trying to to my best to make sense here
everytime another blog post is created for site 1 then another banner is also created linking to site 2
client thinks it may be a big problem - is it?

RE: Is it worth upgrading php to accomodate new WP version?
his developers say this:
The developers are skeptical about the possibility to update PHP on our server as this could seriously damage the entire RV site functionality
i have no clue why his site would be in jeopardy - he said he took care of any security issues by moving the blog to a subdomain from revisitors.com/blog to blog.revisitors.com
i also have no idea whether or not that makes his blog more secure but i need some in-depth professional advice here

RE: Is it worth upgrading php to accomodate new WP version?
this was clients exact reply:
The developers are skeptical about the possibility to update PHP on our server as this could seriously damage the entire RV site functionality

Is it worth upgrading php to accomodate new WP version?
my client revisitors.com has a blog blog.revisitors.com that we cannot update to a newer WP version 3.5.1 because his php version apparently must be upgraded first.
You cannot update because WordPress 3.5.1 requires PHP version 5.2.4 or higher. You are running version 5.1.6.
according to client it would be potentially hazarardous for him to upgrade the php
but we cant update or add new plugins because we arent running the current version of WP
what is worse?
i am responsible for his blog but i feel handicapped bigtime - at the same time i dont want him to do something that could wreck his site functionality either
any suggestions? or advice here?
thanks

RE: Re: blog post title length and url structure
ok andy thanks - i just always thought when you do a search for "how to sell blue widgets to starving eskimos" that the first result in serp would have to be the blog post titled "how to sell blue widgets to starving eskimos" if such a post existed ad indexed.
it's inconceivable to me how anything else could rank higher - much less not being able to find it in the first 10 pages
i am going to manually search 1000 pages just to see if i can find it at all
