Can you please clarify this part:
"However, the 301 redirect for the homepage on the old site points to the homepage on the new site, not to the content from the old site homepage."
Keep in mind it can often take a while to get the full benefits when implementing 301 redirect from an old URL to a new one.

Yes, yes, Askimet is awesome, but add WP Hascash plugin and you'll take it to another level, it stops the bots before they even have a chance to enter a spammy comment.
WP Hashcash is an antispam plugin that eradicates comment spam on WordPress blogs. There is no magic, follow the advice in those guides, work hard and you should see improvements.
Some people argue that it's better to host your own feed, but I like Feedburner as has some good customization options, gives you access to some nice stats as well as giving potential subscribers a number of ways to subscribe to your feed.

Also specific to e-commerce sites, often they have the same product description copied from the manufacturer as thousands of other sites. Unique product descriptions and UGC, such as ratings and reviews can help make product pages unique.

Can you please clarify?
Are you asking if you should nofollow links to websites on your portfolio page, because those sites link to you? Are you trying to avoid reciprocal linking?
In Open Site Explorer, filter the results by choosing **Show 'Only Nofollowed' **

However, it looks as though it has not been updated for some time.
The latest from Matt Cutts is not to use No Follow on internal links (which is how it was used for sculpting) but to only use it on external links you don't necessarily trust / want PR flowing to.
Recently the index has been updated monthly.
You can see the last time Open Site Explorer was updated, in the bottom left hand corner, currently says 'Last Index Update: Jun 6th, 2011' and 'Next Index Update: July 2011'
I've actually found site-wide links to have detrimental effects when tested. I usually go for in-content links.
Web CEO is another software package that includes rank checking and reporting. It actually does a whole lot more than that, but I haven't bothered with any other modules, was only looking for a program to check rankings..
It can be scheduled to run whenever you want, you can choose to have the reports emailed with the results as html or attached as .xls / . csv etc.
