it's normal for it to happen for sites that have overoptimised keywords. Your main keywords wont rank but the others will. It's one of those weird scenarios. Take a look at the page. Was you homepage ranking before or an inner page? If it's an inner page, then it makes things a whole lot easier. Then, check for your current "ranking" page (meaning, you are in the 50's or 100's range depending on your type of penalty) if it's a different page and keeps on changing to other pages, then you need to start cleaning up your links.

Irving, I strongly disagree that just because a mass of spammy links are nofollowed, they are nothing to worry about. It's become pretty clear through 2012's algorithm updates that the search engines are assessing sites based on overall link profile, not just their followed links. Paul

1. i did submitted disavowal for those links - nothing happened for over 3 months 2.i did file 3 reconsideration requests - got same answer "No manual spam action taken..." 3. i have been hit by a penalty im only ranking for my brand and no kw  - i used to rank for kw till september. 2012 4. no warnings in webmaster tools, no warnings at all....

Hi Cary, You must clean up your anchor text, looks like you have tons of links anchoring in as " | <a class="clickable title link-pivot" title="See top linking pages that use this anchor text">limo buses san diego"</a> |  176 | **      320** | http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/anchors?site=www.aallinlimos.com A recommended link ratio is 7:3.   7 being Branded 3 being diverse, exact, and long tail. It would probably be best to contact all these sites and ask them to change the anchor to your brand name. That is if the site is not spaming/overoptimizing and has a clean link profile. Make sure to keep track of your work. If the above does not help, or you cannot get these anchors/links removed. After a few weeks (IMO 12 weeks) send Google everything you have done in a reconsideration request. During this time you can still build good branded links. Hope this helps.

Since the title tag is used for rankings by Google and no one is searching by typing in the phone number, you are wasting your title tag space. Better to put the phone number towards the beginning of the meta description. This way people can see the phone number and call it without having to click anywhere. Cary That stinks, really sorry to hear less than one month of link building did that. Without being able to do a full investigation, I surmise the links simply don't count anymore. In other words, they're likely not hurting you or helping you in any way. Yes, brand is any variation on the company name or URL. Also, this extensive list on link building strategies has some great ideas for local businesses. -Dan

What kind of hosting plan are you on (shared, dedicated, etc)? There are a lot of annoying hacks going around affecting WP based sites on shared servers.

I agree with you and thank you for your answer but at the same time i am more worried abt the structural standpoint - as i responded above to one of the replies - use the example with the hospital A hospital may target very general related keywords but then it may offer very specific services and programs that are all indirectly related. Now those programs are very niche related and specific for certain types of surgeries and services offered, they contain a lot of information and can be expanded way above the 10 pages mentioned. Now the question is what do you do in that case? You'd rather have 5 sub folders divided in other 20-30 categories and subcategories? Or you would rather have them structured in a better way on a sub-domain? What would be your choice in this case?
