Is placing content in sub directories better for SERP
I would also base it on the site content. Does the site content (product listing) warrant an extra sub directory to be created. For example if you are selling cars, then you can have a directory for Honda and then another subdirectory for the specific make with the keyword Honda in it. In your case since the site only has 6 pages, it would not make sense to create the subdirectories.

More than one web domain
_Ok the thing is – you cannot decide between a keyword rich domain and a general company name. After the EDM update, I think you should not be going for keywords rich domain. Moreover, you find it really tough to make your brand presence stand out. For say, if you have a domain like this – seo-company-UK.com, how on earth you are going to boost its brand image. If this is not enough, you will struggle while building brand based links for the website. Hop you understand. _

targeting different keywords for site
Bristolweb, I would approach it this way (and have with other sites): Create a page on Kayaking versus Canoeing. Explain how they are different with really good content written by someone who is a subject matter expert (your client with the help of a good copywriter for example). You optimize around the canoeing portion and you are not sacrificing anything in the eyes of your kayaking clients (you did not sell out to those lowly canoe people). You are simply showing why they should switch.... But if they meant kayaking, Voila! Hope it helps,

Help optimising this site
Hi Bristolweb, Mark Aspey has given a very helpful response. Essentially, this boils down to the business owner being willing to use his home address as his base of operations from which he heads out to meet clients for their kayak trip. Without an address and local phone number, the business cannot participate in local. With one, he can, and he should definitely take the steps of hiding the address as presumably no transactions take place at his home office. Do not worry about building the site in WordPress. It's a fine tool for building excellent sites. If the client plans to use the dashboard to build new pages and posts, be sure you've included something like the All-In-One SEO Pack or Yoast's plugin so that he has the ability to write unique title and meta as he adds to the content of the site.

Duplicate page content
Hi Darren The reason for this is most likely that you have internal links within your site pointing to these pages. Most likely within the web app you have set up www.exampledomain.com as the campaign address, within the site you have a link to the homepage using and another using /index.html [If easily done I would change your internal links all to point to the same place from a housekeeping point of view. However, I would you should either 301 or rel=canonical the homepage to point to http://www.exampledomain.com/ making sure you add the trailing slash to the domain as this gets added anyway. This will stop the page reporting as duplicates, also Google will only see one version of your pages so it definitely won't jeopardise SERPS, in fact it should pack some rankings bonus' for you.](/) The following article covers the rel=canonical solution http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/c... This one covers 301s http://www.seomoz.org/blog/url-re... Hope that helps Justin

Whats the best way to optimise a wordpress website for SEO?
Hi I was planning to carry out all the normal processes of SEO to the site such as KW research, on-page content, header titles, competitor analyses, off page factors etc, I am just concerned by using the Wordpress admin CMS that it is encapsulating the normal seo elements such as page title, description, page names- friendly urls and was looking for any modules that provide direct access to these areas from within the admin panel rather than letting wordpress manage them . I have looked at Yoast and felt that would provide what I am looking for, I am interested in the overall use of Wordpress and SEO considerations as a whole? The trade off for having a user control panel to create the website - like the effects on navigation links, Javascript code encapsulation? thanks for your advice

Google places page where is my additional information
Hi Bristolweb, In July of 2011, Google made a significant change in the information they actually display on the Google Place Page. You should still fill everything out that you can, but Google is only going to publicly display part of it. Rest assured, however, they see everything you've input. Here are 2 great Mike Blumenthal articles on the changes: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2011/07/21/google-places-testing-new-layout/ http://blumenthals.com/blog/2011/07/26/google-places-what-else-went-missing-on-the-places-page-in-the-update/ Descriptions have returned in most cases, but other things like the old additional info and citations are no longer part of the public Place Page. Hope this answers your first question. Optimizing a Google Place Page hinges on 4 key things: 1. Adhere to the Google Places Quality Guidelines to the letter: (http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528 *Note, this is the North American link. If you are located elsewhere, your guidelines may be slightly different. You should find them and memorize them and check back frequently because they do change). 2. Choosing the best 5 categories for the business 3. Writing a good description. 4. Being clear about the business model. Does it serve clients at the brick and mortar location, in which case you may show the address, or is it a go-to-client business model that must hide the address? Once you've done this, gaining reviews and citations are the typical SEO work ahead of you. In my work as a Local SEO, it never fails to amaze me how many local business owners make this whole thing worlds harder for themselves than it should be because they don't read the guidelines. My rule-of-thumb advice is that the most important factor of an optimized Place Page is its lack of violations. It's also important to remember that, these days, the strength of the website is the top overall ranking factor in most local results. Hope this helps! Miriam

help with the inbound links side of seomoz
Bristolweb- Should be easy to help. There are two ways to access inbound link information in SEOmoz that I know of. The first is from the campaign tab under link analysis. Because you say you are limited to the number of links, I think you are talking about this section. In the link analysis it gives you the link details on your primary url and any competitors that you have listed. i think it lists a total of 5 on the first screen. YOU CAN GET THE OTHER LINKS BY DOING EITHER: Option #1:click on the "export to csv" button in the top right and it will allow you to doiwnload up to 10,000 results. Very handy!!!! Or You can click the button under the links which will take you to opensite explorer where it is easier to work with the information because it is displayed in a much easier way to process then information. Option #2:click on the link research and analysis /open site explorer tool (Under research tools). This will provide you with a list of 50 of the applicable links (assuming you have them). if you have used option #1 and option #2 and you still only see 3 links, then you only have 3 links. make sure you are searching on the exact URL address you want.... Good luck. happy linking...

Meta description Tag who should it be used and what should it describe?
I would use the meta description tag synergistically with the intent of the page. if the audience I was trying to reach was local the keyword phrase I'm optimizing for might be "Acupuncture for pregnancy in Chester" or if I wanted traffic from all over it might be "Benefits of Acupuncture during preganancy". Let's assume local. In that case my title tag might be... <title>Acupuncture for Pregnancy Chester | Company Name</title> Of course, I'd include the relevant terms in my H1 tag, again in my content (bolded) with great, relevant copy. (PS - I didn't count my characters for the title or meta description - remember to stay within the character limit recommendations) Basically the content of the title tag, meta description, H1, bold and content should flow from your keyword research and intended audience. That's my take on it, Mark

How best to optimise a website for more than one location?
Hi Bristolweb, Thanks for coming to Q&A with your question. The best way to think of clients like these is not that you are going to be duplicating or diluting your initial efforts for their first location, but that you are going to create new efforts for their second location. 1. Yes, create a unique city landing page for each of the two locations. But, no, do not duplicate any of the content on these two pages. You must write totally unique content for the two pages. 2. Then, brainstorm creatively with the owner to discover other things that make the two businesses unique. Perhaps, one week, the acupuncturist in location A is holding a seminar at his office, while the next week, the acupuncturist at location B is offering a new patient special. Start a blog on the site to begin highlighting the unique things that are happening at the two locations. 3. You are fine optimizing the website footer and main contact page for two addresses. Also, titles and meta on the main pages (like home and about) can be optimized for the two locations without much worry. But the idea here is to start building out new pages or posts that individually highlight the 2 locations. 4. Just remember, never duplicate anything. Always write fresh content. Other than this, you are on the right track setting up the Google Place Pages and directory listings for the two different offices. If this effort can branch out into citation and review building as well, your client should see results. Good luck! Miriam

The use of subdomains to improve SEO?
This is a technique I would only consider if your clients site is already highly authoritative (high PR, DA). Essentially, your splitting up one domain into a handful different subdomained websites. When you have a very strong site and you split it into subdomains, you increase your chance of getting multiple spots in the SERPs. When you split a weak site into subdomains, you water down your authority and it will take extra link building to get each subdomain to rank really well. Perhaps a better strategy would be to do a bit more keyword research and figure out what keywords to really go after with the current URL structure. Instead of going after something like 'bathroom remodeling' maybe you would be better served going after 'bristol custom bathroom remodeling' or something more specific. Sometimes you have to carve out a niche and get some links before tackling a more difficult keyword.

How best to set up Google + business pages for clients
I agree this is definitely the best way to do it. However, since you have set it up under your account, you do have the ability to add other accounts as admins and even transfer ownership to them. So you're not stuck! The link that Sebastian gave above, will walk you through the process of doing that.

Google places page related places links to competitor
Hi Bristolweb! Thanks for coming to Q&A with your very good question. Here's the deal - there is nothing you can do to control or alter this for your clients. 'Related Places' is a built-in feature of Place Pages - Google thinks it is helpful to the user to show him similar businesses nearby. I sympathize with the feeling that this isn't exactly fair to a business owner to advertise his competitors on his own Place Page, but so long as Google feels it is worth it to do so, the Related Places section is here to stay. You ask for help improving a Place Page...would you like to link to a specific Place Page or are you asking for general advice? Please, let me know. Miriam

Local search advice?
Hi Bristolweb, I'm the Local SEO Associate here in Q&A. Your question is an important one. I have several points and tips to share. I'll number them for easy reading. 1. It's critical to understand that local search hinges on 3 key factors: business name, physical street address and local area code phone number. The city in which the client is located is almost always going to be the city for which Google considers him to be a most relevant answer. So, if the client's office is in San Francisco, then his best chances of ranking in local or blended local/organic results will involve 'San Francisco'. San Francisco will be the most important geographic keyword term on the client's website and it will be the location for which he is permitted to create a Google Place Page and other local business index listings. 2. As you have said, many clients will have go-to-client business models (contractors, painters, carpet cleaners, chimney sweeps, etc.). Within their service radius, there are likely to be a number of towns and cities. The San Francisco Carpet Cleaner may also serve in Berkeley, Oakland, Mill Valley and San Jose. These other city names are going to be his secondary geographic phrases. 3. In rural areas or for business models that are truly unusual and are therefor doing business in an atmosphere of little to no competition, the client may well be able to get true local rankings in his service cities, just because Google has nothing else to post as an 'answer' to queries. If there is only one tortilla shop delivering baked goods to 5 different towns in Idaho, then Google may show a true local result to anyone searching for 'tortilla shop' in any of those 5 towns simply because the shop is really the only thing on offer. Or, Google may decide the search isn't really right for local results because there is a paucity of data and they will simply show organic results instead. 4. In most cases, however, your clients will be in situations of moderate to high competition, in which case, what you will be competing for outside of the client's city of location is secondary rankings (generally organic) for each of his service cities. In most cases, the carpet cleaning company with an office in San Francisco is not going to outrank the one with an office in Berkeley when someone searches for 'Carpet Cleaning Company Berkeley'. *See point 1. 5. So, as the Local SEO on the project, your job is to come up with a strategy for highlighting your client's work in different service cities with the hopes of gaining secondary visibility for him. You will be doing this through a combination of content development on his website and, likely, off-site efforts such as link building and review acquisition. This is the work that is ahead of you in helping clients in this area. I hope this gives you a general sense of the work involved. If you are going to be doing Local SEO for clients, I highly recommend that you spend time every day reading up on this topic. The key challenge in Local is its ever-changing nature. You literally need to be a daily local news reader to keep on top of these changes and put your knowledge to work for your clients. It's a truly fun field and one that keeps you on your toes for sure! Please, let me know if you have any other questions and good luck! Miriam
