How does local citations and links differ from national links?
Hey Brandon! If you're a local business, there are likely 2 types of links that would be most relevant to your business. These would be local links and industry links. So, a local link might be your local chamber of commerce. An industry link might come from something like a national organization that represents your industry. Obviously, it's great to get mentioned in local news, local blogs, etc., too. The main thing to concentrate on with this is that you are publishing content or joining organizations that precisely relate to your business and its location. The ideal is for these things to happen naturally. If you are targeting a state, that is not considered a true local search. Local search relates to cities - not states. So, from your query, if you are a BBQ restaurant in Colorado, the local element of your campaign would revolve around Denver, or whatever city the restaurant is in. If you want to gain visibility for your BBQ keywords and the state of Colorado, you'd need to approach this organically rather than locally, hoping to show up in the organic results rather than in the local pack. So, you might produce content about the history of BBQ in Colorado (like, Basque sheepherders in the 1800s BBQing or whatever) or make infographics comparing the best BBQ restaurants in the state based on some criteria or write article about statewide BBQ contests, or what have you. Hope this helps!

Perfect Site Structure help please and EMD question
There is no right or wrong here. It is how you feel comfortable laying out a site. A menu with every page on a site can be a disaster for a user experience, but if it's not that many then it's fine. You could do a single services page and then just add links in the context (assuming a paragraph or something for each term.) or you could do a secondary menu for instance on the right side of the page that links to the particular pages. Whatever makes sense to you and users, I won't speculate without knowing the full sitemap.

Penguin Strategy Idea
Sorry I didn't respond sooner Gary. I really appreciate getting a recommendation from you. I guess what I was disagreeing with was the idea that starting over was what John always recommends. I possibly misinterpreted your response though. I have seen a couple of sites make fantastic recoveries from Penguin, but it's definitely not common. The majority of Penguin hit sites that I have seen are in the same boat as you where they appear to have done all of the right things but are still waiting for improvement. Very frustrating indeed.

Keyword and SERP Help Please
If your site is new(er) and / or simply does not have much trust from search engines yet (do not rank well) I would strongly encourage you to use similar keywords on page as long as it does not compromise user experience. Ideally also get those keywords in your H1. As your site becomes more trusted you can get away with more (less keywords on page) and still rank. It sounds like you may have a site where I would not recommend such approach yet.

Is there a Penguin Time Limit
The Penguin refresh comments, on my part, have been entirely speculative. It's hard to believe Google would go that long without some kind of data refresh on something with such wide repercussions. On the other hand, the data so far seems to suggest that that is what they're doing. I have no credible evidence, other than my own disbelief, that a site hit by Penguin can escape Penguin outside of a confirmed update. I hate being at Google's mercy for knowing when updates happen, and I do believe that Penguin will be more tightly integrated over time, but I also am fairly sure that Penguin had wide-ranging collateral damage that Google didn't entirely foresee. I think they're still trying to wrestle the Penguin update themselves. So, for now, the best evidence I have is that the only Penguin updates are the ones we know about. I can't prove it either way. I definitely don't think it's like Panda. I wonder if they occasionally do smaller data-only refreshes on Penguin, but I can't back that up.

Web Design - Text links better than drop down menus?
Hi, If you configure your drop-down menus for SEO by using the correct CSS technique (i.e. the links appear on the page but are activated with a hover, which I am sure you're referring to), this is fine for SEO purposes. Best to avoid hundreds and hundreds of links in drop-down menus (they can get cumbersome and bad for usability, and dilute the passed authority). If it's best for usability to have a huge drop-down but link numbers are concern, some sites use JavaScript for links that aren't important for SEO on "mega menus". As a basic rule though, you will not suffer by having some navigational links in CSS-led drop downs.

Does building multiple websites hurt you seo wise? Good or bad strategy?
Also, be sure to read Craigslist's terms and conditions for frequency of posting, and where you can post pets. If people think you are a puppy mill, you're likely to have your ads quickly flagged.

Do citations count as backlinks?
Hi Berner, Good question and some thoughtful answers here. I'll chime in with my 2 pesos. A citation is defined as a web-based reference to a local business' complete or partial NAP (name, address, phone). A citation does not have to include a link the company website. For example, a blogger could mention your restaurant's name and address, leave out the phone number and not link to the restaurant's website and that would still count as a citation, meaning that the business owner must be certain that the blogger has accurately published the restaurant's name and address. On more standardized platforms, like local business directories, nearly all allow you to include a link to your website. This does count as a link, but whether it is nofollowed or not is up to the individual directory. So, this does bear on how much 'juice' a given link is passing your way. Regardless, if your business is a local one, citations are a core part of the work you will be doing to promote your business on the Internet. If your business model isn't truly local, then citations aren't really meant for you. I think you'll really enjoy reading the great section in the new Moz Local Learning Center that covers the ins and outs of citations. Tons of great resources here for you: http://moz.com/learn/local/listings Hope this will help, and kudos to all on the good responses on this thread!

Meta tags not dead? Is this keeping me hidden?
Thank you Philip Thank you so much. I am quite lost. I watched videos and created my pages based on these videos from a seo company. They preach that you must do like site.com/city-keyword-keyword/target keyword. So it is hard to know who is right and who is wrong. I added my state at the beginning thinking that it will help local seo but is this not the right way to think? Thank you. I have a lot to do

Competitor sites vs mine - No links, lower DA, and still beating me.
Keep in mind that Moz tools use their own resources. We don't have access to Google's index or tools, and we don't have their resources, so we're not going to be able to show you data that's based on every link in existence for every site out there. So, when you look at your competitors and see they don't have strong metrics, it could be just because our tools haven't picked them up. As far as companies go, if you want someone to take an in-depth look at your site and competitors and figure out a plan of action, we have a list of recommended companies in the footer that could be a good place to start.
