Visit one of the URLs that SEOMoz is flagging up as duplicate and see if it loads. If so then check the referrer (if you download the report into Excel referrer is column AM) and see which page sent the bot there.

That might help give you a better idea of what's gone wrong.

Also, where are you getting 784 indexed pages from? Webmaster Tools or a site: search?

You might want to check that the linking root domain isn't just the domain the page is hosted on. If it is then it's probably worth just removing the extra page altogether.

The best solution if not would probably be a rel=canonical tag rather than a 301. This means you won't be increasing page load times and it's fairly easy to implement too.

I really want to answer this question but I don't actually have any proof either way.

I am however fairly confident that it's total junk.

A lot of people have been asking this question recently.

At the moment the only way to do it is to email the webmaster and ask them to remove the link.

The keyword difficulty tool gives an indication of how hard it will be to rank for a certain term. So the lower the difficulty the easier it is to rank for.

A good rule of thumb is that you want to rank for terms with a low difficulty that drives a lot of users who are likely to achieve your goal. So for me he perfect term would -

• Have a low difficulty score
• Have a high volume of searchers
• Have a higher than average conversion rate when those searchers hit my site.

Do something really noteworthy/or outrageous/controversial that doesn't stink like a PR stunt then I see no reason why you wouldn't reap the rewards.

Maybe hire someone like Michael O'Leary of Ryanair to stoke up the controversy? (I'm only half joking)

What about regular PR (public relations)?

There are loads of hyper-local news portals that you can try to get featured on even if you're not a big brand.

Subscribe to Google alerts and you should be able to find amateur and local journalists who you can befriend. That's not to mention services like HARO.

If the URLs are friendly then you could try and rebuild everything but keep the important URLs static.

Failing that you can migrate the pages onto new URLs by using 301 redirects. Doing this shouldn't have too much of an adverse affect on your rankings (not in the long term anyway) and also means you can swap to nice looking URLs.

Alternatively if you want to swap over to a new domain then you can use 301 redirects and the change domain option in Google webmaster tools.

If you're changing the site architecture - say for example because you're editing the main navigation - you will want to make sure that you prioritize your important pages but that's really just SEO 101 and probably similar to what you have in place anyway.

So is example.com ranking for terms that example2.com used rank for? If you check your analytics you should be able to see if those keywords are driving traffic.

I would doubt that it's solely the domain name causing this.

How far have the rankings slipped for exmaple2.com? Have all rankings dropped the same amount? Are head terms affected more than longtail terms? Does it still rank for it's brand name?

Having a presence on social media can be an enabler for other marketing methods. For example having followers on Twitter makes it a lot easier to get people to visit your blog which can drive links which in turn drives rankings and sales. Not to mention the potential for your client to set themselves up as a thought leader within the industry.

Even if you're just providing a curated source of industry specific information there's always something you can do on social media. Once I came across a maritime protection service who had a Twitter account that detailed all pirate activity off the coast of Somalia in almost real time. How cool is that?!

Don't put it in article directories.

If you feel that you'd be able to build enough buzz around the article and gain links from having it on your site then do that. If it's a really, really, really AWESOME, once in a career type of article then definitely put it on your site.

If it's good and you want to build relationships within your industry specifically with the webmaster of another site then publish on that 3rd party.

It is feasible however for your own sanity you might want to group some of those keywords onto a single page. So if two terms are similar - like [pink tinted UPVC double glazing] and [pink UPVC double glazing] you would put them both on the same page.

Personally I'd take all of those 100 keywords and do a card sorting exercise that splits them up into topics. You might find that it makes sense to group some of the terms together because a user would expect to find those topics covered together. Maybe targeting  [cleaning up after a UPVC installation] as your primary keywrod for a page but also including [products for cleaning up after a UPVC installation] on the page.

If after creating the pages you find that you're not ranking for one of the phrases you can always add an additional page that focuses on one of your supplemental terms. In the example above you would create a new page about the products.

The discrepancy between the SERP Analysis and what you're seeing could be down to some level of localization or personalization happening on your SERP rather than the tool being wrong.

So if you try the same search in an incognito window that should disable any personalization and you might see a different set of results. Apologies if you've already tried this.

I don't think you can pre-approve these comments but you can set up alerts that let you know when someone has posted and also blacklist certain words if you want to. I'm assuming your worried about spammers.

Hi Larry,

To get a report of all of your competitors backlinks you'll need to use Open Site Explorer (opensiteexplorer.org). Just input the domain that you want links for and you can access all of the data you need.

If you want to compare your links with their links I recommend going to the "Linking Domains" tab, selecting "Show domains with links to all pages on this root domain" and then downloading that report. Do the same for your domain and then compare the two reports in Excel.

Peter is right. On page optimization is only one part of the puzzle.

For example if your homepage even mentions a term it can sometimes outrank a more relevant page on the interior of your site.

I'd start by finding out what sites the people who use your service hang around on. Is it biz opp and affiliate sites or something else? Then target those types of sites.

Plus you can always try getting some high quality content featured on tech review sites. Maybe an infographic that transparently explains how the schemes work or an alternative review of a product?

You could choose a single version of the product page to act as the main version and implement rel=canonical tags.

The downside to this is that (in theory) only that version of the page will rank.

If it's really important to have the different page variants rank for different search terms then you'll have to start rewriting the product copy.

Hi Boo,

Adding the additional phrases into the text and title tags of the page that is currently ranking #1 could help. So long as you do it in a natural way then there shouldn't be a problem. My rule of thumb is that if it sounds stupid when you read it aloud, then you've over done it.

If you add something into the URL you should be aware that you're effectively creating a new page so you need to weigh up the benefits  of doing this for a page which already ranks well for a relevant term -horse buggies in this case.

It's fine to build links with the anchor text of the new terms (so long as it's white hat link building of course).

If the market for large and giant horse buggies is large enough to warrant a page that lists exclusively those products then that's personally the avenue I'd go down - create a new page which is tailored to help people looking especially for large and giant horse buggies.

Let me know if that didn't make any sense at all - I got disrupted part way through writing.
