Social bookmarking ?
article directories aren't as effective since the major panda update a while ago. social bookmarking has its place, just like anything else. Do not bookmark from hundreds or thousands of low quality, PR 0 social bookmarking sites. It;s unnatural and Google will know what you are doing. Instead focus on fewer, high quality social bookmarks. Major social bookmarking sites help you get crawled and indexed faster, as long as you do it naturally

What should I do?
I would build links in to the site through outreach and content production on the site - does your client have business partnerships they can leverage for links? You need to develop equity into the site. Position your client as an innovator, leader, something to set them apart from the competition, and then go out and promote them. Establish relationships with bloggers and influencers and have them write about your client as well. Lots to do to promote the site, but in today's day and age, you still need links to rank your content, especially in a competitive niche like electronic cigarettes. Good luck, Mark

Forum Signature Links
**Hey, this is exactly right: **chase the marketing, not the algorithm If you search around your topic and find frequent forum listings in the search results then get in on those pages and help out and that link back to your site is some good solid branding that will drive referral traffic. On the flipside, if someone stumbles across that post and you have chipped in with: "Yes, very good information, I am thanking you muchley" And have a signature like Keyword Spam | more Keyword Links | Blarghh SEO Puke Then all you are doing is indicating to Google that you are trying to manipulate the results for those keywords so you will likely do more harm than good. The spammy link algorithm aspects like Penguin are only going to get more aggressive so as Corey said above: chase the marketing, not the algorithm! Marcus

What now?
Andreas, start with doing some backlink research for the top 10 sites that are ranking for that keyword. Find the backlinks that you can also get your site. Analyze the on site activity that those top 10 sites have engaged in for that keyword and try to emulate some of the best practices that you observe. Keep doing this regularly and track the rankings weekly, monthly. You should see progress.

Outrank?
Hi Andreas, A very open ended question. It depends on a lot of factors, the competition, the industry, geo target. The fundamentals involve 3 aspects: Strong On Page SEO (www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/on-page-factors) Strong Off Page primarily link building (http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links) Social Media (www.seomoz.org/blog/the-social-media-marketers-seo-checklist As long as you have these 3 aspects covered, you are off to a very good start. Keep monitoring your progress regularly. Setup baseline metrics for rankings, traffic and conversions and keep marking progress each day, week, month, quarter, year. All the best.
