When using Site Explorer to find out my competiters links so I can do some link aquisition SEO do I look for the "inbound" links or or "linking domains"? Also, what filters should I choose? I want to make a spreadsheet as Rand suggested in his video and start to prioritize my link building.

On the top menu, I select All Links, only from External sites, pointing to entire Root Domain, not grouped by domain.

I export that as a CSV, open in Excel, and do a custom sort in this order: (A) Followed Links (Z to A), (B) Domain Authority (High to Low), (C) URL (A to Z).

Work your way down the list and color code as you go. Typically mine will look something like this:

        • Blue for Links we already have.
        • Green for Links we can get with a little work (such as a guest post on a blog)
        • Purple for Links we can get, and I have already applied/submitted and need to check back in the future.
        • Red for obviously Paid Links
        • Black for Links we cannot ever get. Typically these are from other sites owned by the competitor.
        • Yellow for Spammy Links that I don't want us to get.

If your competition uses a particular type of link strategy extensively (such as widget link building for example) you'll want to add another color for that.

Run a new Copy of that same report for the domain in 3 to 6 months, add it to the bottom of the existing spreadsheet, go to the Data tab in Excel and select "Remove Duplicates." Then start tackling the new links on the bottom.
