Two websites vs. one for SEO
There's another trap that I've seen people fall into, and that is not looking at the pages you're competing with in the search results. If you look at the SERPS for your target term, are their any insights there? How competitive is it? Are there lots of ads? Are the pages that are ranking optimised/targeted to the search term? Do the competitors have a reputation/brand associated with this particular search term? Based on the pages being returned, can you establish the searchers intent? (Is this a navigational/transactional/informational query? What is the searchers level of awareness of this product/service? You mention local - for this term, is there a local intent? How localised as the search results for this term? What else apart from the authority of the page is helping the top ranking do so well for this keyword? What about related searches? Are their opportunities to target this term more broadly by building content around the questions subtopics related to this term?

URL Structure
Ouch. The only thing I'd add to Donford's comments is you're going to want to limit the redirect chain as much as possible when renaming files and folders for a third time. If you can go directly from original folder/file to newly renamed folder/file and skip the interim non-SEO-friendly URLs, that would be best. That said, you're going to have to bear in mind and plan for any newly acquired bookmarks and/or links since the relaunch.

Need help determining how toxic this backlinking is
I'd say you need to get a full overview of what's been done so far - and sign-off on anything that they're planning to do for you in the future (including tactics, target media and so on). You might find this helpful: http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/what-is-nofollow/ See the bit here, under "How do we get natural links" http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/unnatural-links/ Switch to PR focused work, in the future, where your submissions are editorially reviewed (sure, some will be rejected - yet this is all about quality over quantity). This is a good rundown of what not to do: http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/seo-to-avoid/

Screaming Frog showing 503 status code. Why?
Recently I had that problem also mate. Thing is if you have any server issues you might get 503. If your site is on maintenance you might get 503. If your site gets high traffic and goes down you might get a 503. Best thing to do is check with Fetch as Google tool from WMT to see how Google sees it.

Do I need to block my cart page in robots.txt?
It is best practice to use nofollow tags and your robots.txt to keep search engines out of not only e-commerce pages, but also any areas that require a log in (such as a customer profile page or shopping history). You want to do this so that they do not accidentally index pages that will redirect users who aren't logged in or create a weird/negative experience for them.

Marketo Attribution in Google Analytics
Hi, Have you set up analytics tracking on the pages of your subdomain also? If you are using Universal Analytics then sub domain tracking should work as is - all you need to do is put the same analytics code from your main site in your subdomain landing pages and you should see the original referral data. I am not familiar with Marketo but if you set up the above and start seeing a lot of referral data to the subdomain which looks like mail clients (gmail, mail.xxx etc) then that would indicate that the tagging in the mail links is not set up well and in that case yes manually tagging them with utm parameters will work.

How many redirects are too many?
I agree with Richard, based on your explanation, this is the proper way to do the 301 redirects. Your plan will work just fine. GWT is Google Webmaster Tools

Unsure about main menu structure on a big magazine site
The main menu structure is where it would be important. Does your layout now have a menu with 100 links? If your hundred categories can be sorted into five or ten more general categories with other categories under those, it would make navigation easier. You can still keep all of your categories as first level under the domain in the URL, even if they are drop-downs (or however you want to do it) under an over-category. If the point is to get away from so many links in the header, even if they are not immediately visible, then the question is how important are all the categories. Can some be consolidated?

Australian local business website on a dot.com - how do I ensure its indexed/ranked by Google.com/au as priority
I've got a client in a similar situation. They have a .com domain but they only offer services in Australia. The good news is they rank just fine for the search terms that are relevant to their business (these are primarily queries with local intent). In Webmaster Tools, you'll want to tell Google that your site is targeted to an AU audience. There's an option to set this under "Search Traffic" -> "International Targeting". Click the "Country" tab and then you can choose to target users in a particular country. We also made sure that it was very clear from the content on the site that the business was based in Australia paying particular attention to local search optimisation (See: http://moz.com/learn/local ) - getting local business listings in reputable, authoritative directories etc. It's best to think of it from a visitors point of view - what are the on-page signals you need to provide to give them confidence that they are dealing with an Australian site. (Local address, Australian phone number, mentions of relevant places / people / events, associations/badges/certifications from relevant Australian bodies etc...) Hope this helps - Good Luck! Doug.
