  • That's a little odd. I'm still getting the old results.

  • Unfortunately, this is an incredibly complex situation (in many cases) with no easy answer. Unlike a penalty or typical Panda update, this sounds more like a signal change favoring one type of site over another (one set of signals over another). I'm not going to say "big brands", because that carries a lot of assumptions and baggage, but there are certainly signals that tend to be correlated with more powerful brands. If Google really just decided to change their preference, there's not a lot to be done. You may have done nothing wrong, per se, and it's hard to fix something that isn't broken. In that case, you've got a few options, SEO-wise: (1) Hunt for greener pastures. You may have to find new, long-tail keywords where the bigger brands aren't playing. This is a big project beyond the scope of Q&A, but there are cases where you do need to go after new targets. (2) Re-evaluate your keywords based on impact/traffic/conversion instead of ranking. It's possible, in some cases, that big brands could dominate the Top 5, but that, for some reason, you're still getting decent CTR on certain keywords. Do that analysis before you give up on these keywords. (3) Hang in there. Sorry, it sounds like lame advice, but these kinds of updates often go back and forth, and you could see Google tweaking the mix over the next few months. In other words, whatever tactical shifts you make, don't completely cut off the pages/tactics that were ranking before (just in case). All of that said, it's often the case that the situation is a bit grayer, and Google has made this shift because of quality issues it saw across a large number of sites. It's hard to speak in generalities, but Panda updates have gradually been harder on certain types of pages, like product categories, because these are often fairly thin (search results, etc.). If all of the smaller players took a similar approach, it's possible you all got devalued at once, and there may be a way to fix that. Unfortunately, that kind of fix is really hard to advise on without at least some sense of the keywords/pages in question. I guess my main point is that it's easy to say "Google gave big brands all the rankings!" and see red, which can make you miss the few things you might have power to change.

  • No amount of length is ideal, but make sure your NAP is consistent across all citations. Generally I work with a 200+ character description. I have not seen any ranking differences due to business description length. Also, if I was you I would not out your clients website like that here or anywhere for that matter.

  • Google usually doesn't like these types of links. They can result in a Penguin problem. These links are often nofollowed by the websites publishing software and will not count in your rankings. Webmasters really dislike rubbish comments that are placed simply to produce a link.

  • The problem is the order here. Remember that redirects fire from top down. In this case, you're telling it to redirect the main page, then redirect the secondary page, so what you get is / redirects to http://www.mainsite.com/tshirts.html and then it tries to redirect /blue.html but it's already done the previous redirect, so it tries to append blue.html to this and you end up with what you did, http://www.mainsite.com/tshirts.htmlblue.html

  • Currently, Moz Local doesn't accommodate service area businesses because a number of our partners don't accept an address of that format. I apologize for the inconvenience, but we do need a full street address for the business in order to publish it.

  • Hi there! Just a heads-up, you may get more of a response if you can provide a bit more detail about what it is you're seeing. What problems are you having? What's the context? The more info you can provide, the better.

  • Hello again - it's hard to say exactly why a website isn't picked up in our index updates. We are constantly working to improve the way our crawler, Rogerbot, operates, so I'm really hoping that your site is picked up in one of the next updates. For now, the best strategy is to keep working on your link building and watch the update schedule for our next index. Thanks, Kevin Help Team

  • There are so many answers to this. One discussed in Mozcon 2015 was, "spend less time on linkbuilding." If you focus more on building rich content that will help users on your website, links will come. "If you build it, they will come." Also here are many guides, and you can find hours of material to read on your own. Guide 1 Guide 2 Guide 3 - This one has many helpful tools in it.

  • Hi Charles, (EDIT: I mean Louisa! Saw the screen name, but not the signature.) Great question! At the moment, though, the really aren't any third party dashboard platforms that can import Moz campaign data because our API is limited to the Mozscape index. So, while there are a handful of platforms that use Moz link data—Raven, for example—there aren't any that'd allow you to import anything else.

  • On a given website, it is better to get links from the higher PA pages (all of the pages will have the same DA). So a homepage link for example (which will usually have a higher PA than other pages on the site) will be better than a link from a deep, newly created page (which is likely have a low PA).

  • Hi there! Keeping the main brand as the domain has a few advantages: Short domain names are easier to remember, easier to share, and have a smaller chance of resulting in typos. (ex. 20 characters vs. 9 characters) It's also just a good idea to have content from one brand in one place, and not spread out of many domains. Not exactly applicable post, but you get the general idea. There are ways to move domains/brands. But there is a chance of loosing authority, brand awareness and rankings. Here's a post on how to help with the transition if you find it necessary. I hope these resources help!

  • Hi Mirko I think the root fix, is to have a better URL setup (and not have them changing like that). This is something I think only your developer can answer, since I did not set up the site nor do I have expert hands-on experience in Magento - but I do know in theory, it should be possible. I've never heard of another eCommerce site doing it that way. If you need further help from the Moz community, let me know and I'll see if someone else can chime in! But I'd definitely try to talk to your developer about it.

  • Publish articles that are "best on the web for their topic" (or as close as I can come to that) and always with unique perspectives and great images.  If you do that your visitors will spread the word about your content for you. Grammarly, Hemingway, any good graphics program

  • That clearly changes my ideas about this ;-). As we're talking about a couple of million pages I wouldn't include them in the sitemaps then and to make sure they're absolutely made sure that it's noindexed.

  • Yes, options in both GA and WMT's. The new search analytic's (beta) is where I would start. All you do is tick pages, country (assuming limited to a country). Then dates - compare and choose your date range. You then choose page measuring. After that press re-set on page and then test the next page. Then you will get clicks per page. Let me know if that assists or need any more detail.
