Best Practice For URL When Creating Silo Architecture
Hi Cal, URLs are in my experience a very small part of the ranking algorithm. Data from Moz's recent Ranking Factors Correlation Study seems to back this up - see https://moz.com/search-ranking-factors/correlations. As such, I wouldn't worry too much about the URL structure when making decisions like this. That said, I'd tend to lean towards the "Default" option you provided because you said you were writing blog posts, so /blog/ should show users what to expect from this page a bit better than the "Alternative" option. If I'm a user, and I see the URL http://chocchip.com.au/services/website-design/medical-clinics, I expect to see a services page, not a blog post. Just my two cents - feel free to message me if you need any more help Mark

To consolidate or not to consolidate?
Great great question. From my experience you'll be looking at a roughly 2 to 8 week hit in rankings. I know that's a wide margin but it depends on more than just the single redirection of your homepage on the city domains to the city page on the global domain but also includes the content and of course the internal links. You'll want to insure that you move any content that's attracting traffic, social signals or links and also redirect the pages with links or traffic to the appropriate page on the new domain. Past that it's really just a matter of waiting and trying not to chew your nails off. I wish you luck, that's a hard call to make but I think you're making the right one. Regards. Dave

How to defer an exit survey?
The results I'm interested in are about "If that survey has helped you website". So, maybe impact on traffic volume, conversion rate and bounce rate. We don't seem to have much of an issue with detecting exit intent. I think we do that as well as anyone does (and no-one seems to do it really well) Exactly. So, if you say you don't have much issue with detecting exit intent, but at the same time saying that what you detect is incorrect, then how can yo say that you don't have an issue with detecting it? About the cookies - look into .unload() or onunload events. Most likely, it's gonna be much more complicated than that, but that's where i'd start looking.

Amount of Internal Links?
The unofficial best practice is 100 as the upper limit but in the end I'd try to think of it more from the context of how the weight passes between pages and how you want the engines and users to prioritize your content. I actually wrote an article on this exact subject some time ago on Search Engine Watch where I show the math and how site structures to pass weight differently. That's probably a better answer that a flat number without reason so if you're interested you can see how the weight flows with diagrams at http://searchenginewatch.com/sew/how-to/2179376/internal-linking-promote-keyword-clusters. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions.

Sudden drop in index, is this a bug?
Good point. Sorry, I didn't realize the statement was specifically about the Sitemap feature. However, it's not unlikely that both issues were related.

Best Plugins for Rich Snippets
Hi Brian, Breadcrumbs are one type of structured data, but I just mentioned as an example. Please, take a look at this article from Google help to see whether they are relevant for your site and how they are displayed in search results: https://developers.google.com/structured-data/breadcrumbs

Canonicle & rel=NOINDEX used on the same page?
Not putting canonical on NOFOLLOW pages makes all sense in the world, because if page has NOFOLLOW, then bots WILL NOT FOLLOW ANY links on it, including canonical link. **P.S. **If your question has been answered, please mark it as answered to prevent trashing the forum

Anchor Text - How many and what do with our old posts
Kristine, Thank you for your post. I do appreciate the time You mentioned that you want to rank for xxxx - that's going to be tough. Think about what makes you unique and go for those keywords. ANS: For the alternative key words and productions - films etc. We do well in Google. Our own site brand xxxx or xxxx we rank either 1 or 2. And a number of the productions we do extremely well until the big news organisation start posting. We have been involving this strategy. But the search volume just isn't there for the alternative keywords. I'm just dismayed when I see sites that haven't updated in months ahead of our site by 10 or 15 postes It looks like a lot of content on your site is timely, and you mentioned that you get some information early. In that case, I'd argue that you should get Google News status. I've never personally set that up for a client, but there are a lot of people on Moz who do. ANSWER: We did try this a while back -- But were originally rejected. I assumed this was due to the crawl erros -- We will be trying again soon. We have eliminated our 404 on Moz and are just waiting for them to expire on Google. You said that you don't want to ask for links, which is why you've had a hard time increasing your DA. Rather than asking for links, focus on what you can do to make other site owners' lives easier: offer to guest post, syndicate content, create some partnerships. Think of link building as PR that Google can track. ANSWER: we do all these things already. I actually think the problems is the lack of understanding from the others we have relationships with. OVERALL COMMENTS: I have made some mistakes in the past but the site is looking cleaner and cleaner I resolved them. The lack of internal linked anchor keywords was a big one. We are getting there. However as you said it is It is just easier for us to get to a premiere red carpet event then it is to rank on Google. I do appreciate everyone's comments. Thank you all for the time. We will continue to slog onwards] Susan

SEO - is it site or page
Hi there, It's usually a combination of both. The strength and relevance of the domain as a whole is important and usually, the search engines will measure this through a combination of links pointing at the domain and the overall quality of all pages on your website. For example, if you have 1000 pages and half of them are low quality, then that may affect the strength of the domain as a whole. Generally, individual pages are what matters when it comes to specific keyword searches because the search engines want to provide the best result and a result is an individual page. So if your page is most relevant and best quality, it has a good chance of ranking for that keyword. However, if it's a competitive keyword (many are these days!) then the search engine will also look at the strength of the domain as a whole to see if it should rank your page. I hope that helps and makes sense! Paddy
