Sorry but input buttons are built for this. Why wouldnt you use link buttons and style to match your existing UI? Links of any kind are not the answer to this at all..

Definitely do not h2 tags aroudn your entire navigation. it doesn't semantically make any sense, which can only lead to long term SEO problems (if it isn't a problema lready). Use CSS styled navigation through an unordered list HTML element. Ensure the keywords are relevent and you set the title attribute of your links appropriately. If one linke has more importance than the others, maybe try making it bold with a html tag. This might emphasise it's SEO importance.

We have sites built in Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal and also custom built CMS's. All of these are search engine friendly.  Wordpress in particular has a number of excellent SEO guidance tools to put you on the right track. The consensus of opinion from the comments given is that you need to question your web developer's opinions.  Making the wrong choices now will only land you in hot water in the future. I think that its an issue. Although the link juice passed is not that high, it makes complete sense to get the images on the same server as the website. As an immediate step, you can add a nofollow tag to the links just to make sure that no link juice is passed.

maybe the best solution is to sort pages with high bounce rate and modify the link structure of those pages

Since I posted this, I've been using Google Fonts and @font-face instead of doing image replacement. When I need to use a font that I don't have a license for, I do image replacement as I described above. I've not run into any problems or penalizations with that method.

You wouldn't want to do that because most likely Google would just ignore your tag. I agree that PageRank is a weak factor, but how else would I intelligently determine value of individual links from individual high-ranking pages? Also, I am not looking to estimate referral traffic - that seems an easier problem to tackle. So, the question remains: How 1 link from high-ranking web site would numerically influence organic search traffic. Page Rank of a site, Page Rank of a Page, Number of other external and internal links from that page, PageRank of our website - seems like all are important factors in a model that I am trying to find.
