Here are my recommended first things to do for a new site

          • Write a PR about it and send to PR sites
          • Write an several articles about it and send to article sites
          • Tell it to your friends on Social Media (Facebook Twitter etc)
          • Start an email campaign to your existing email list announcing your new site
          • Get bloggers to blog about your site

Make sure the site has no errors and well designed with useful information to encourage repeat visits.

            What's the kids sign ? 🙂

My approach for new sites if the on page is all done and shinny:

            1. Setup a blog and write at least one short post per week for the first few months.

            2. Sumbit them to digg and a few other similar places like mixx.

            3. get social networks in place and build a fun list (you start following people and a good % will return the "favor")

            4. Press release but not a spamy bulk type of Pr as it will do you no good.

            5. Leave a few prints online with custom or automated comments and forum posts - if you do it on autopilot, keep the numbers of links low so you won't get in trouble.

            Just a thought.

There are certainly a lot of worse things you could do than follow this guide by Oli Gardner - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-noob-guide-to-online-marketing-with-giant-infographic-11928
