Bit.ly links - SEO benefit

What sort of impact do bit.ly links have on SEO. Do they enhance the quality/amount of link juice passed and are there any other benefits to using them?

From an SEO perspective, they will count as a link pointing to your site. But since they're essentially 301 redirects, you loose a bit of the link juice.

There's a lot of reasons people use them, mostly for social media from what I've seen. Since they're shorter, and you can hide UTM parameters in them, they display better on FB/LinkedIn and are much shorter in terms of characters which makes them Twitter friendly.

Personaly I find a little bit useless the links that come from shortened URLs. Even they are a 301 redirect, the linkjuice they transmit is diminished.

You've pretty much nailed why we use them at Moz. We have a custom bit.ly domain (mz.cm), they look nice on social media, and they hide the UTM parameters we use.

Any updates on this for 2019? In my MOZ Link Explorer I'm noting my competitors high value (high PA and DA) "dofollow" links that come from a bit.ly link. So obviously there is SEO "juice" value.

We use Bit.ly to include links in the SMS we send to our clients. for example:

 https://bit.ly/2rCyvkP links to https://mindviewpsychology.com.au/online-bookings/

We are not posting this link to our website or other websites. Sorry if this is a dumb question but would this bit.ly linkback come through the bit.ly site, or is there something else we can do to get some benefit from this? Does not show up in our external links in MOZ.

yes this is perfect example how bit.ly should be used. It's not dumb because you didn't use for some SEO purpose. I also seen bit.ly sharing on Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram or text messages. Because space there is limited and sender looking for maximal efficient usage of message.

That URL will be indexed if you place it somewhere on internet where can be crawled. Like on your blog or if someone other do this. That's why it can't be seen on report - because no one knows that it even exists.

There is just one small issue. IF you add + after bit.ly URL you can see it's statistics:
https://bitly.com/2rCyvkP+
so right now anyone on internet can see your clicks.

Thanks for the advice on using URL shortners. I have a client who has been told they were great for SEO purposes which I thought was incorrect but needed to double check.

They certainly have a use though.
