      Hi,

I’m just doing some keyword research and using the Google Keyword-Tool and Traffic  Estimator to get my search volume but I have one question according to the settings available at Google that I hope you are able to answer.

One setting available is the targeting language which refers to the browser language (as far as I know). If that is so: Why is the monthly search volume not changing when I search for “language” and “Sprache” (Which is “language” in German) with the setting “all Countries” in different targeting languages in the Traffic Estimator or Keyword-Tool.

Even with the targeting language “Japanese” there is no change recognizable compared to “German” or “English” . Shouldn’t a browser in Japanese search for “Sprache” less often than a browser in German?

I hope that you can help me. This is crucial for my further Keyword researches.

      Many thanks

Hey Alexander! Great question, here's a couple thoughts:

        • When you type in "sprache" in to the keyword box and then just leave the location and language to "all", you'll see that there are 1,830,000 monthly searches for the term
        • If you change the country to Germany, you'll see that the "local monthly searches" changes to 1,220,000 local searches (searches for that term in Germany)
        • Changing the language will change the keyword suggestions/ideas at the bottom: you'll see that the "sprache" search with english as the language will give you 7 keyword suggestions that are english words being searched in germany.
        • If you change the language to german, you'll see the number of keyword suggestions/ideas goes up to 725. Those are german words being searched in germany.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you still have questions.

        -Justin

          Hey Justin,

thanks for your answer, great to feel the backup by the forum.

So the language-setting is not the browser language but really german words (according to keyword suggestions)?

          Cheers,

          Alex

That's how I understand it but the Google help documents say that it will influence the "local monthly searches" column:

If you access the Keyword Tool from within an ad group, the Local Monthly Searches column will factor in your campaign'scountry and language targeting (if you target a region or city, only the country will be reflected). If you use the Keyword Tool new window, your country and language selections will influence this column. The **Global Monthly Searches **column always shows traffic in all countries and all languages.

Hope that helps. I don't find it to be super exact since when I use the US and language Japanese for some common search terms, it lowers the local search volume by only like 5 or 10 percent. I wouldn't make too many firm decisions based off of it since the accuracy of the results seem a little suspect to me.
