Response rate in a linkbuilding campaign
-
Good afternoon,
We will be starting our linkbuilding campaign in the next couple of days. Initially we will contact the authors of editorial content where our competitors are mentioned as one tool in a list of tools. We want the author to add us to the list as an additional tool. What success rate shall we expect, in terms of the % of people who include us vs the number of people we contact?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
That might be a hard question to answer - it could depend on a number of factors including:
- Any exclusive rights that competitors have signed up to for being listed
- Your contact points at each of the domains
- The way that you approach them
- etc.
I've ran link building campaigns that have had as low as 2-3% response rates all the way through to campaigns that we expect nearer the 50-60% mark. There are so many factors at play that you can never predict what would happen.
Seeing as though the sites you've mentioned already mention other competitor products, they're likely to be more open to adjusting that content to include you in it. With this in mind, you might have a strong 'in' to your campaign so I would expect a higher response rate because of that.
I hope this helps.

Not much to add to Sean's answer, except make SURE that what you want them to link to is worth it! Ideally, you'll have an angle, such as something the competitor doesn't. Even better, a new feature that the blogger could write about, to give them some 'juice' for their article.
Remember to think like them - What can you give to them, to help them make their piece of content better. To get what you want, you really need to figure out what they want
