External links that don't exist

I did a crawl test and it shows that there are 2215 external links on my home page here:

https://www.playshakespeare.com

An "External Link" is defined here:

https://moz.com/researchtools/crawl-test

"Number of links on a page that point to a page that is not on the same domain as that page."

There are NOT 2215 external links on that page. There are only a handful at any given time. Why is the crawl test reporting thousands over that?

I checked your site with a plugin - and it seems to have more than 1800 links - don't forget that the links in the navigation - even if not visible still count as link.

I did a quick crawl of your site with Screaming Frog - your site seems to generate a lot of time outs & 5xx errors - could be that these are seen as external links by Moz. Response times are very bad for most of your pages.
