Tumblr Spam

I'm being outranked by a site that builds a ton of keyword-stuffed tumblr pages with 15+ links per page pointed back at their site with heavy keyword anchor text.

What gives with tumblr SEO and their followed links? Anybody have any experience with this? Can there truly be this much value embedded in the tumblr domain?

Well fortunately it shouldn't take too long for them to incur Google's wrath. What is your domain/page authority compared to theirs?

If you just slap up a tumblr page with links to your website, I don't think that it will do you much good.  Why?  Because those links from your tumblr page are not going to carry any juice unless they have links into them from other sites that are indexed by google.

So, if these guys are outranking you only on the basis of their tumblr pages you will be in less trouble than if they pointed the links that go to their tumblr pages directly to their website.

.... I also think its pretty dumb to put up pages and pages on Tumblr, each with 15 links pointed to your website.  I think that is like painting a target on your own ass.

That's what I've been thinking but it's been months.

Yeah I absolutely hate it and that is a perfect analogy. Of course these aren't the only links they've built but I'd say it's a good 60% of what's listed under the Just-Discovered tab on OSE...

And just to clarify, the rest are spammy articles on random "weight-loss" websites or hip hop forums. (this keyword is not related to overweight rappers whatsoever, btw)

I personally think they are creating a Web Wheel over Free Web Properties, Blog Platforms and Websites (providing free sites such as Yola, Weebly, etc.) by adding back-links to each other along with adding spam content with no value. But as they are doing this with more number of websites, and may be in more than one niche; its possible that Google is not able to slap them. There are many Media websites which keep on adding the "duplicate" content as "NEWS" and still these get in higher rankings.

To outrank these websites, either you can go with the SEO Professionals who provide SEO services or you can start working with the same strategy for the temporary time period. But please do not link or try to create any connection with your MAIN websites with such spam sites.

Okay, going to dig in more for your main question...

But to address Just Discovered links. It collects tweeted links, and I'm going to say that Tumblr may have a higher precent of links tweeted than other places. We do have some spam filtering (as so much of the net's spam & crawling takes time/monies), but I can't help but wonder if Tumblr may get passed them a bit more than other sites.

I definitely agree with the others that Google's going to hit them with a spam algo issue. They are getting smarter about connected sites even if they aren't on the same domain.

That said, you can report people for spam to Tumblr. I'd say use it wisely. In experience, Tumblr support's been pretty quick to help out.

Though it maybe time for your company to jump aboard Tumblr. But do it the correct manner.

I'm curious about this quote:

Can you expand on this? It seems as if you're saying the JD tool recognizes tweets only, but I see links on there that couldn't possibly have been tweeted quite often. Now I'm wondering how exactly this tool works.

Just Discovered was created as a tool in response to the many folks asked "Why aren't my back links showing up in OSE?" when they either finding them in other places or building them and not seeing the link in our index.

Just Discovered indexs links that are tweeted as it crawls Twitter in search of links. It doesn't really matter how many times a link is tweeted, as long as that tweet is public and it happens once, Just Discovered should find it. More about Just Discovered.

On a related note, I've seen sites that will push their blog RSS content to Tumblr (along with other social networks). This has the white hat purpose of increasing your content exposure within those networks.

For example, if set my blog to automatically push a title, exceprt, image and URL to all my social accounts. Does Google consider this spam?

You want to be careful about duplicate content doing that. Your site's going to be easier to control the meta tags and such. If you're going for just bigger audience exposure, more stuff to share, etc., you might consider deindexing those posts. I'd suggest reading Dr. Pete's post on duplicate content post-Panda. On the other hand, Tumblr's notoriously bad at SEO without major tweaks so it might be worth looking into where you're ranking (or if you are) for your Tumblr and then going from there.
