When you are manually posting to blogs, how closely related does the content of the blog have to be to the website?

Yes, those are absolutely related. Not sure if I could come up with an example that would be more related than that.

A few examples that should help:

• Hotels and travel blogs are highly related.
• Hotels and cooking blogs are reasonably related.
• Hotels and business blogs might be somewhat related.
• Hotels and medical blogs are not very related.

Along with relevancy, I'd be worried about quality of the websites as well. Focus on posting guest posts on higher quality blogs with higher quality content, and you'll do better in the long run.
