Unless you got hit by a update i would focus on obtaining quality back-links instead

How do I know if I "got hit by a update"? Does the gradual drop mean i got hit or does google alert me in webmaster tools that i got hit?

You can use this http://www.panguintool.com/ to see if you took a hard dip after a update.
