Its rare that a directory will help you in any way. Have you read the SEOmoz blog? Go and look for posts on Penguin and you will see that these types of links are more likely to hurt you than to harm you

Directories still work. They may have been devalued and not as effective as they were before but they are still a cheap way to get started. Will you get to the top with directory submissions only, probably not but that doesnt mean they are a waste of money (especially since people think they dont work any more). I use them as a cheap way to supplement my link building.

To answer your question the only difference between the paid and the non paid for 95% of directories is the rate at which they admit your site to the directory. non paid is usually 3-6 months and paid is usually 1-3 days. Its up to you. other than that there is no difference.

Directories are a good starting point for link building especially for a new site.    However, you have to be very selective as to which directories you submit to.  The oldest and most relevant are Yahoo directory, Best of the Web, DMOZ, (good luck with that) We have a very select list of less than 25 we will initially submit to.   That's it for directory submission. You will need to diversify your linking strategy moving forward.

Yes. This mirrors my own experience precisely.

The contention that it's "rare that a directory will help you in any way" is overstated, IMHO.

Carefully selected directories can help you in a small to moderate way.

So 25 out of 1, 000 000 directories are potentially, possibly, maybe a little bit helpful - as long as you don't get links from any that aren't the 25 useful ones, which could cause you a lot of trouble
