  • Yes it is still relevant, the www is a old unix standard but is not nesasary today and i believe makes domain names less memerable and is a confusion when talking of root and sub domains. Your in luck, I just finished a tutoiral for microsoft IIS servers. i will be doing more including how to do this in code, but for now, i only have the Domain name fix http://perthseocompany.com.au/seo/tutorials

  • I agree, also added if its not in the HT ACCESS then have a look in the cpanel. Some cpanel hosting allows you to redirect within the panel. Can cause a bit of a headache if you arent aware of it and are looking somewhere else.

  • Hey Craig, We implemented it recently and saw immediate effect within 24 hours. Google indexed our priority landing pages, and our paginated pages were offered up as effectively 'sitelinks'. In effect we got one of our landing pages ranking No.1 on a strong keyword phrase, and we gained 4 extra paginated links just below the meta description. Seems to be the best way to handle pagination. Truly awesome, and very happy. Croozie.

  • I've got the same issue. I have a lot of links on my site and I was trying to see if adding title="something" for each link will help or not. We could always try it and see what happens. I don't see a reason why if they were added in it could cause an issue with the search engines. However if anyone has more experience on this I'd love to hear about it.

  • Awesome! Thanks for clarifying that. I'm assuming I'd us a rule similar to below. Is that right/ RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(.*)$

  • I would not give the experts a blog on the wordpress sub domain be sure that when they blog it is on a sub folder for your website so when links are built they benefit your site directly and not wordpress.

  • The recently leaked google doc seems to have the answer. #9 here explains it (partly) - still frustrating though that black hat redirects are working! http://www.seomoz.org/blog/16-insights-into-googles-rating-guidelines

  • best info across the industry is that there's some loss of value in the transfer overall.  Also, just because a 301 takes place does not mean it will remain - Google will want to get additional confirmation over time that it's still as relevant as it had been before the 301.

  • Examiine the issue further: if you redirected the non-www url to the www-ones then simply type one without www and if it jumps to the www one the redirection is right. In this case you have to remove your non-www urls from the google index via google webmaster tools and they will no longer be there. If the url does not jump to the www one the redirection is not good

  • Great! thanks for all the info!  I guess my mentality needs a shift.  I get so focused on what google wants rather than the user.  I will start my day from that mind set today. thanks

  • Another great tool is the SEOmoz toolbar plugin.  When the highlight tool is set to Nofollowed (pink), all the nofollow links are highlighted in pink. Best, Christopher

  • The bottom line is your site is ranked based on search engine crawling. Your present flash site is mostly not crawlable so only 3 pages are indexed. When you switch to HTML assuming you offer proper navigation the site will be crawlable which should result in more pages being indexed and, if your content is of a quality nature, better rankings. When you switch back in 6 months, how exactly will you switch? If you move back to your 11 year old site, then yes your results will return to the same as they are now. You will lose any gained ranking. An alternative is to build a flash site on top of your new HTML site. Those who visit your site with flash-enabled browsers will see the flash content. Those who do not have flash-enabled browsers will see the HTML content. Your indexing and ranking will therefore be maintained. If you use the latter approach, it is important your HTML content and flash content are in synch. It would be considered black hat and punishable to offer one set of content in flash and a different set of content in HTML for the purpose of manipulating search rankings.
