  • first of all dont panic. don't make any crazy adjustments. step one: breathe. step two: edit your meta description that sounds natural to someone in maysville will want to click on. step three: edit the h1 and h2 as per instructed in my first post step 4: add your website to any maysville directories or whatever county or state that it's in, specifying Maysville. step 5: join a Maysville community forum and be involved. Let them know what services are available to the residents. step 6: repeat for the other keywords you want. step 7: realize if you have 100s of keywords, narrow that down and cater to those keywords or make them broad enough to where you can at least land on the first page for all of them. step 8: create a google plus page for your website. Just one, and create the content stating you cater to said areas ie..maysville,smallsville,gotham,metropolis, etc.. step 9: wait a few weeks to be re-indexed. step 10: relax and enjoy the seomoz community. Edit your content to not have Maysville as the main word in a seoquake tag cloud. if you dont know or use seoquake check it out. google it. I understand you are being outranked by others with little or zero content, but what are they also doing that you're not? If they are not back linking, could they be on directories?

  • Hi Steven, Don't you just love that moment when you realize that you were clever enough to figure out the answer without help from anyone else? Very nice of you to "take one for the team"  by leaving the post to help others who might follow in your footsteps Sha

  • Hi, Let me back up a step. When you say remove duplicate content, do you mean delete the page? For example, pageA.html and pageB.html have the same content. In your example, are you asking do you delete pageA.html or delete pageB.html? I wouldn't delete either page as both pages likely have traffic, links, etc. Instead of deleting, you want to pick which page is the canonical version of that page. More simply, when somebody Googles the terms that page is targeting, do you want pageA.html to show up or do you pageB.html to show up? If you decide you want pageA.html to show up, then you need to redirect pageB.html to pageA.html. That way, if somebody goes to pageB.html they end up on pageA.html. If you delete pageB.html and somebody goes there, they'll end up on an error page. Now, on where question...in terms of deciding what version is canonical, I would suggest you look at authority first and foremost. If the domain authority in OSE is higher for pageA.html than it is for pageB.html, keeping pageA.html makes sense. Things like URL structure are only mildly important, especially when making decisions like this. Hope that helps. Thanks, Matthew

  • Thank you so much! Working on fixing the page titles, they are 1/2 and 1/2 that way. Is this the correct code to put in my .htaccess file to direct the .asp to .php pages? RedirectMatch 301 (.*).asp$http://www.example.com$1.php and then add in single redirects to the landing pages that don't have the same name? THANKS!!!!  KristyO

  • Let me make sure I understand the question. Our corporate name is what DMOZ uses instead of our domain name so our anchor text backlink highest percentage comes from abc corporation at 18%. Second keyword achor text match is 7%, this one links to our page that survived the storm. We only have about 9 keywords that show any type of percentage on our backlink profile. Although english to spanish translation is a good keyword, more of the keywords that were lost were not even listed as anchor text in our link profile. Example, German Translation Software  - dead ringer for what we offer, was first page. Now about #57. Hope I was on the right track, if not please let me know. Thanks,

  • Yes, this will remove them, but if you want to speed up the process you can use the google URL removal tool http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=164734

  • Absolutely. We have seen nothing but positives when using the hreflang tag. Of course, make sure you use it appropriately and don't accidentally tag a page that doesn't have a sibling on the other ccTLDs

  • Google would prefer in most cases not to index search results. What we find best is a method called Tag Seeding, where essentially you are linking to a set of known tag pages that help Google find the relevant categorical results. This helps prevent Google from finding an unending number of pages while, at the same time, allowing you to expose users to your content in an organized fashion.

  • Including the keyword in the URL would be better. If you change the URL's I would recommend downloading a redirect plugin. WordPress will not automatically redirect for you. You should beable to change the page/post URL by editing the SLUG!

  • I would also suggest claiming and tidying up the Google+ Local/Google Places entry for the business (or creating one if it does not exist) and ensure that the business is listed consistently in all the major directories in order that it is clear where they are and how to contact them. Asking satisfied clients/customers for reviews or feedback, or pointing them in the general direction, can also help.

  • Hi Samuel, You're on the right track with this question, but you might want to think about your site architecture some more. I went to your wedding-singer page then to the homepage and couldn't find any way to actually get back by clicking any links. You should think about reviewing your navigation on page. You're right that /home/ isn't adding any benefit but you won't receive any huge benefits just by changing the directory to /live-music/ either.. but I do think it's better to have something more relevant than not. If you do change the URL, you'll need to set up a 301 redirect to point all links to the new page, and thus flow the old link juice to the new page as well. Wordpress has some good plugins that are very easy for that (simple 301 plugin for example). Be careful about creating too many 301 redirects with the WP plugin as it can cause your site to slowdown as all of those redirects are stored in the database, rather than in the .htaccess file. The link juice lost isn't that significant in my opinion. Just work on building some nice authority links to the new URL. And remember to be "organic" in your link anchor text not to face the wrath of Penguin Hope that helps, Jordan

  • Hi Lee, Just a quick reply on that score is just to make sure you double check your on-page optimisation for ese and then ensure all your off-page work, including link building reinforces that brand. You may also find that the 301 redirect may help boost esedirect for 'ese' anyway. I have a client who is still ranking well for an old brand since his 301 was put in place, even though the old brand isn't mentioned on the new site. Your sites should be in an even stronger position given the consistency of brand name. All the best with it! Martin

  • I had a site disappear from Google on June 25th.  Webmasters Tools reports 0 impressions in Search and the Sitemap now reports Indexed Pages - (just a dash).  This came after a period of time where the site had a few hundred impressions per day in Search and a high CTR on these.   Otherwise Webmasters Tools reports no errors.
