  • Hi Alex, From the looks of it, there seems to be a lot of 301 redirects going around. As far as I am aware 301 redirects dont always pass 100% of the weight accross to the new URLs. There is some sort of decay factor involved. There also seems to be the case of the main links to the site passing through two 301 redirects. This is possibly one of the causes of drop in site strength. What may be worth considering is checking how many links point to the main URL, rather than links into the redirected URLs. Was the site fine before the 301 redirects were implemented? Ben

  • Hi Omar, It really depends how you do it. If you are removing the dropdown from the navigation completely then these pages are going to be losing out on a lot of internal links as a result - every page on the site that was previously linking to them would have stopped. Alternatively if you were just going to remove the dropdown from the homepage only i.e. have a different navigation format for the hompage, then it will not affect the pages as much. Bear in mind that both ways you are removing links to these pages so there's a chance they will suffer slightly. You could test the effects by removing one category and monitoring rankings as a result. On another note, I noticed some no followed links to internal pages at the bottom of the homepage. Have you done this for any particular reason? You may be losing PR for no reason. Ben

  • Ya, I know I'm not in good shape, you should have seen it before though. I'm a designer turned web kid, cause my family wanted me to take Moondoggie over. I'm really enjoying figuring it out and learning , but it gets difficult flyin solo and this forum is the one place i've found to really ask questions. I'm taking down the social media tracking which is the #.UBFKrzGXT_Q on the urls. from now on I'll try using the minus, old habits with the underscore will die hard though, the e commerce template i have uses the underscore in it's static pages and won't recognize the minus. I'm not quite sure how to get around that? On my index I have I thought that helped this : _Eg: if you go with http://www.moondoggieinc.com/index.php that will return the home page but under a different url then http://www.moondoggieinc.com/  _    ???  But maybe i was wrong? Are there any other ways to make the URL structure better? I am trying to change all of the cat's over to have static pages.... I also have my parameters set so that pg and cat sorts Thanks so much! I really appreciate your help, and I'm so thankful for this forum. KristyO

  • Gosh, there is a lot going on here so it's kind of tricky to give an answer to this without seeing the domains and doing some analysis but I can give you some general advice. First, check this post out, it's old but relevant: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-guide-how-to-properly-move-domains After that, the big one here is are you trying to do something that is manipulative? If not, as long as you redirect the sites to the relevant content rather than just folding them in, you should be okay. Done right, if the sites themselves are clean, then nothing bad should happen but again I am just shooting from the hip here with no links. To play devils advocate - if they have no traffic, is there much benefit to the redirection? Do they have valuable links? Content etc? Will you move the content and then do individual redirects or are they just old doorway pages that have really stopped working now? Worst case, you could always kill the redirects if it causes you a problem and you would bounce back but really, this all depends on the status of the sites themselves and whether any other funny business has been done to the main site or these other sites. So.... impossible to give a 100% answer here without more details but I hope this helps. Marcus

  • Ok, fair enough, heres another obvious request, never having this problem, or knowing much about your site, means most will be clutching at straws just suggesting the obvious, like ...tried reinstalling? I know it seem daft but just wondering. May "work".

  • Thanks everyone for the responses given me a good idea now so I guess it's just a case of pen to paper and drawing out the structure. Thanks to Ryan as well for input.

  • That makes MUCH more sense.  I'll Google it a bit and see what others have to say.  Thanks Keri!

  • I've run into the same problem. As best as I can tell, it can't be done. To link your personal Google+ profile to your content, you have to use the "Contributor to" section under the "About" page of your profile. Google+ Pages have no such section. The only work-around I can think of is the "company persona" option you mention, but like you said, that defeats the point of authorship.

  • Just sounds like a strange anomaly. "Sell my car" is a very broad search term. With the constantly changing landscape of the Google SERP's, it could well have been something like a new video result that was a video on selling cars that pushed you off the page. Private browsing also blocks cookies and that's not a consistent way to monitor results.

  • We have a training site that sells trainings. The 2 owners of the training site each also has personal coaching practices. They want possibly a 2nd and 3rd site on separate domains for promoting their coaching services. Does that help?

  • Not really. That will simply keep page rank from flowing, but it doesn't fix the root of the problem. It's not necessary to re-write everything. You just need to clean it up. For instance, instead of using: Luxury Resorts Deluxe Resorts Standard Resorts Budget Resorts You simply have a drop down box that says "Resort Type" and then the dropdown says: Luxury Deluxe Standard Budget That one change alleviated 4 "resort" references. Plus it's more user friendly and easier to read. There are many consultants (like us) that can also repair your content if you don't want to do it yourself.  It just needs to be natural and the way the verbiage is currently, it's viewed as keyword stuffing. Structure the site to the user and not to Google. Your ultimate goal is a sale and your current sites are kind of tough to read because you've exerted too much energy into pushing keywords into the content. It may take a couple of days per site to scrub out, but it will be worth it in the end.

  • I wouldn't drop these pages that are bringing in a majority of your traffic and try to promote your new product on these pages.

  • 1. Export all links from Open Site Explorer and additionally any other link profile tool like majestic SEO or anything else. 2. Review the links (depending on the numbers) and spot by domain names first the ones that are looking spammy. 3. Review as much as possibile all / other links from the profile to see if those make sense, if there are any "bad neighbors", sites that are delisted etc. 4. Make a "bad boys" list with the links that you  don't like, ask someone else to review them to have a second opinion and if those are not targeting the home page move those urls if possibile and set the target pages to 404 and when that's not an opinion try at least to go after the removal of the links - it's a pain, it's hard work but better safe then sorry. There are also some services online that can do that - lately those are popping up like mushrooms after rain.

  • Hi Matt, Indeed, a few months ago I sent a paragraph of text by email to be changed on that article, and no doubt this is the reason why. I have had it removed in the last 10 minutes or so, just for piece of mind. Thanks for clarifying the issue.

  • Looks to me like lots of ebay search results are indexed in Google... Search google for "baseball cards for sale" No panda problem there. If you know how to get rid of these I would really enjoy it.
