  • Thanks I'll try. I also found another one - at first it's only UK looking but actually it has directories for all European cities inside, for example: http://www.qype.co.uk/es511-barcelona

  • Hi Gianluca I think you have misunderstood my answer. I am not redirecting the user to their language. I am referring to two sites the first Uniband. This displays the colours & SKU of the product on a single page, the colours change depending on IP lookup via Maxmind (Maxmind databases are among the most popular and accurate IP geolocation databases available), this site is not multilingual. Second site, reddiplex is just an example of a multilingual site, the plugin displays the language based on browser preferences, however the user can choose whichever language they prefer by selecting a flag

  • Ah, thanks about it. Withdrawing a change of address is what I looked for. Just in case if there is a need to revert.

  • My tip here is to return 404 to your old domain and customize your 404 page telling people that you moved to a new domain. This approach will gives Google the appearance that your site has been discontinued but for users you just moved. One extra thing is to try add a meta refresh in this 404 page, transferring users to the new domain. Hope it helps.

  • Thank you for the suggestions. It looks like we may have taken a hit from Panda 21 at the beginning of November but we were moving the site to a new server so the days right before the update don't have any analytics data. The last couple of days saw a spike last year because Advent started this weekend instead of next weekend this year so that's why some of the numbers for this weekend look off. Overall though, it looks like we hit a peak for most keywords in January and then saw a major decline in February when we received our manual penalty and even though the penalty has been officially revoked, we've never recovered fully. Thanks for the panguin suggestion. We use chartelligence which actually overlays within GA on any chart which is very nice. I guess I'll go back and manually disavow those bad links even though I've already submitted them and see what happens.

  • Does anyone have any ideas? You can do the most important research yourself. You lost traffic. So ask yourself.... What traffic sources are lower now?  What rankings are lower? What specific information can you get yourself from analytics and watching your rankings? We can only guess because we have no information about the history of your site nor do we have access to your data.

  • It's really hard to speak in generalities, but my gut reaction is that splitting to a subdomain is going to cause you more harm than good. You'll likely fragment your links and could very well harm your root domain. If the blog was clearly harming you somehow, that would be one thing, but to do this preventively is, IMO, a very bad idea. I'd really rather see you focus on improving the quality of the blog and better integrating it into the main site. Keep the posts you have that have solid links and traffic, but work on cleaning up the rest. Especially focus on duplicate content and any issues that may be easy wins. Meanwhile, maybe make a move toward quality-over-quantity in 2013 and reappraise how the blog fits your broader business.

  • I completely agree with Marisa - I have an e-commerce site that recently went through a re-design and it now has drop down navigation for the sub-categories which makes the site more user friendly, but it also increased the links on the page significantly and SEOMoz issued this warning. However rankings are better than ever and this was a logical step in good user interface design, making it as easy as possible to get to the information the visitor is looking for in the fewest clicks.

  • Very interesting. I'm also convinced the "not selected" graph is a big clue towards a Panda penalty. I guess I will have to wait another couple of weeks to see if our changes have affected the graph. Maybe this time lag is why it can take upwards of 6 months to get recover from Panda!

  • Hi there, Although I do understand your reasoning, we have the resources and people quantity to focus on all things at once being a big a company. So at the present moment it wouldn't be a matter of prioritizing work - but rather - delivering the best future-proof strategy. I don't mind doing the same as our competitors, but sometimes stepping out of the sheep line is good. You do make a great and very valid point addressing that this is an extra step for the visitor and could lead to fewer conversions. This is holding me back a little bit. But, if properly implemented, wouldn't a content focused site rank way better than a product page would? I guess the real question is if prospects would really find value in the information about "security testing tools" or they would rather just get the product page instead. But just looking from Google eyes, what do you think of this approach? After re-reading my post I realize I might sound as if all I want is you to agree with me and justify my approach, I don't really. I would really value any honest thoughts and reasoning .

  • For what business type are you advertising? Web design and SEO? They don't show up in local results. Or is this a different type of business? Does it have a unique address and phone number, or is it at a PO box?

  • Do you still link to the homepage using anchor text containing the keywords you're talking about? Is the service page linked on every page (as I guess the homepage would be)? Have you analysed the backlink profile for both pages and broken it down by site and anchor text? The homepage is the most visited page on most of the sites I work on, so I wouldn't see this as a problem, only if you have a keyword cannibilisation issue.
