  • Before you make a big move like this with a money site you need to know what you are doing.  There are many ways that website moves can go wrong because the person doing the move lacks knowledge. When a website is moved your goal should be to have a huge increase in sales.....  you are worried about being hit with a huge loss.  That tells me that you should hire an expert to assist you and teach you how this is done. Websites should be moved by a person who has the knowledge and care to do it properly.

  • Hi Paul. It seems you are doing the right things already. Remember to target both low and high competition keywords - and focus on both short and long tailed keywords. Use good synonyms. fix <-> repair, PC <-> computer. Dont target too narrow. use Google Keyword Tool to find good keywords. And, yes i would be that guy sharing a link to a page that saved my day by fixing my harddrive. I would comment and ask questions i stumbled upon on of your videos, when searching for someone or something to help me fix my problem. Try taking a look at good performing local repair shops in ie Manchester. What have they done. From who have they acquired good links etc. Keep it up

  • Thank you for your advice. I have heard from some companies that changing hosts changes the ip address and this can have an impact. My key issue is that i need a 301 redirect because both the www and non-www version come up as two different sites. I have told google and bing through the webmaster tools which I prefer and I've put in the canonical link tag in the head of my doc but I hear it still needs a 301 redirect.

  • Hi Sarah, the search engines won't index the no follow pages even if those pages are linked to from elsewhere? - Incorrect. The search engine will index the pages if the crawler reaches them from another link, provided this other link is followable. Assuming the page you are linking to does not meta rel nofollow, noindex. no link juice will flow from the page with the (no follow) links on? - Correct. Link juice will only flow through links if they are followable. With regards to your general statement about why your rankings have dropped since the redesign - have you changed the overall architecture of the site? Change the URL structure? Or is it simply a refresh, moved a few bits around, prettied up the pages, etc? Matt

  • I'm going to be a little harsh here. Does this website know your level of experience?  Are you charging them appropriate to your level of experience? The methods that you have used so far are not likely to make a huge difference in today's world of SEO.  And, depending on how you are going through with this campaign you have the potential to do harm.  Be very careful about what anchor text you are using.  Overdoing social bookmarks and directories can cause a site to be affected by Penguin.  See http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/are-seos-destroying-small-businesses-a-penguin-story Reciprocal linking done on a large scale can get a site penalized.  A few reciprocal links are not going to get a client penalized but are not going to be terribly effective as compared to one way links. If you are not certain what else you can do for SEO, it's totally ok to ask questions and learn what works to rank sites these days but be careful that you are not doing your learning (and making mistakes) on someone else's dollar and with someone else's livelihood.

  • George, i've build websites in 3 different languages and without any of the discribed errors. Each language gets its own title, own description and own content. Did you handcode everything of did you use a CMS to build the site? Since every language has its own folder I can imagine that every language has its own file to. If that is not the case then i would suggest looking into CMS systems that enable this way of building up websites. hope this helps some. kind regards Jarno

  • Hi Paul, Good to see you getting in to the mindset of an SEO. It's a challenging, yet rewarding job. I've recreated the filter OSE search you've done... http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?page=1&site=www.springer-marketing.co.uk&sort=page_authority&filter=follow&source=external&target=page&group=0 These are only external sites, but some are similar, for example 301 from www.springermarketing.co.uk/ (no hypen). You can give yourself strong links, internal lining is a fundamental SEO strategy. Have a look at this great article by SEOMOZ http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/internal-link Hope that helps Iain - Reload Media

  • Hi Kenneth, Good news, Google loves people like you. You're making the Internet a better place, by focusing on the content. You're sitting on something valuable, and the best thing to do is to rewrite them, as if the attracted links before, they attract more. If for some reason you can't write a page, our the subject is now out of date, 301 them to similar page. That will pass on the link value. Hope it goes well Iain - Reload Media

  • Just to elaborate on the size of the site, we sell about 150,000 products, and many of them can be accessed through multiple categories. Thanks for the responses!

  • Very true words EGOL, thanks for the kick in the right direction. SEO and people with my 'Must plan everything' frame of mind are never going to get along well.

  • The question is, do you see SEO as a service that complements your current product? Think about it from a branding perspective: I have an SEO site.  If I decide to sell SEO tools, I might promote those tools on my SEO blog, but I probably would create a new branded domain for the tools themselves, right?  That is why I'd say that you should start over with a new site. I'm also going to let you in on a little secret.  Very few of the top SEO companies rank for SEO related terms.  This is because ranking for SEO terms simply isn't worth the time and energy that you need to put into it in order to succeed. Focus on building a beautiful site, writing stuff that people find useful, and providing excellent value for your first clients and you will do OK. BTW, congrats on taking that leap, here are a couple of articles I wish I'd read before getting started: http://www.sugarrae.com/seo-sphere/the-number-1-mistake-new-seo-consultants-make/ http://www.seomoz.org/blog/setting-up-your-seo-project-agency-for-success http://www.seobook.com/starting-new-seo-business-2011 http://www.seobook.com/starting-an-seo-company Good luck, and if I can ever be of assistance, I'd love to help.

  • Just wanted to bump this in case anyone had any ideas?  Feel like we're missing a trick by not having good pagination on our forum.  Have been unable to find any way of adding this.

  • I'm happy to help Marie. Yes, when I first saw it I was looking at a competitor and I yelled "yes!!!" and then I looked up my own sites and I yelled "nooo!!!" And then I realized something else was going on, LOL. Have a great weekend!

  • Based on my conversations with Google, relevance is absolutely something to think about - if your site is all about oranges and you get links from sites/even blogs that are all about cars, it's  flag because it can look spammy. Unless it's an outlier and is just one (or two) random links from sites that aren't related in content to yours, you risk harming yourself by connecting your site with unrelated content.
