  • I imagine this would have to do with social sharing usage. If your posts are getting a lot of attention via Twitter, Google Plus, Facebook, etc within the first few hours, you stand a chance. How long has the website been around? Do you have social sharing capabilities embedded in the site? Scott

  • I would recommend: If the page content is truly that similar to the the others, I'd recommend using the rel=canonical tag on service pages to point to the profession page as the authoritative page OR Add enough unique content to the service pages to allow them to not appear as non-duplicate. This would involve either having your in-house team developing useful content or forcing your users to enter a paragraph of text that would only be used on those service pages. OR Last resort, you could noindex the service pages to avoid duplicate content indexed by search engines. If you noindex, you will have more control over which pages you are telling the search engines are most important. Scott O.

  • If you already have the 4 sites running on different domains, each has different content, and you linking sparingly and appropriately between the domains, I'd call it a toss up as to whether it's better to keep them separate or bring them together.  Have you looked into buddypress for managing the separate domains within a single CMS?  I think it can handle that.

  • Hi Angelo, Excellent question! From what I can see there are some concrete steps you can take for immediate links: You can research where you competitor's links are coming from (or research which websites and Blogs are relevant) and then try to obtain links from these websites. How "odd" then that most of the high-profile websites will however ask you to advertise (in some way)... which basically means you will be buying links from domains with authority (against Google's T&Cs wasn't it?) Commenting on Blog posts is always a quick tactic that allows you to create branded backlinks, while potentially opening up extra opportunities with the Blog owner. Register with directories (also good for Local SEO/Google+ Local) Try to find pages with broken links on websites that are of interest and notify the webmaster while kindly requesting a link to your own domain. Or, you can put your PR cap on and come up with an "idea" for content in the hope of organically increasing your links as described previously.  A good idea goes a long way! As to tools to use, I do like Buzzstream since it takes some of the pain out of linkbuilding.

  • I've always used GWT as a report on my 404, and since it stops on 1000 404s I always download them for further reference and then mark them as fixed. 404s are a natural response in the whole internet so fixing them is a good thing but waiting for google to remove them from your GWT account amy take long time. If they don0t bother you follow streamline's advice.

  • ImplementingImplementing pen graph tags on your website ensures you optimize any social shares directly through your website.  If you are blogging on this site it's especially important to use open graph tags To control the titles, thumbs, and descriptions of items shared from your site.

  • Jamesscaggs, Do you know if I should avoid making too many anchor text/nofollow changes at one time with more than one sitewide backlink?

  • Having separate URLS/domains for your mobile site is OK, but not ideal. See https://developers.google.com/webmasters/smartphone-sites/details If possible, I would switch to a responsive design. Otherwise, make sure you've setup the meta tags as recommended in the above URL.

  • Creating an entire marketing and branding strategy is far beyond the scope of a simple Q&A thread. I would suggest hiring an hourly consultant to assist you in creating a strategy.

  • Ideally I would use the /market/ directory over a sub directory.  That would allow the store to benefit from the authority of the existing site, rather than starting afresh on a new sub-domain. Some software combinations could make that tricky, but in most cases it should be fine.  If it does get tricky there is also a work around where you can have content on a subdomain served from a directly url using a reverse proxy.  Messy though. The final option seems unnecessarily complicated to me.  I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve there.
