Ecommerce Internal Linking Questions
What is the best way to do internal linking here?
| WayneRooney0 -
Problem with description on Google search results.
What was the search query you used to get this snippet? When I searched for "site:www.onecklace.com/ name-necklaces" on Google.com I got the snippet as shown in the attachment below. You'll notice that this e-commerce style snippet includes the number of items and a couple of entries from the page. This leaves little room to display the meta-description. I do note that the length of the description used is the same as the one that you've shown. Unfortunately Google will determine how best to list your page in the Search results. vlcWkAp.jpg

Organic 'not provided data' - strip out brand?
Hi Paul, You're not able to get any keyword information out of "not provided" keywords not matter whether they are branded or not. One work around that can give you a rough idea of branded vs. non-branded keyword traffic is to look at what page your "not provided" traffic landed on. If they landed on your homepage, they probably search for a branded term. If they landed on a product page, they probably searched for a term based on the product name. It's not perfect, but it can help give you understand what's going on. You can find instruction on how to look this info up here - http://www.prontomarketing.com/2013/09/unlock-your-not-provided-keyword-data/ Let me know if you have any other questions! Tim

Help with new site revamp SEO LOST!!!
Daniel, I've worked on a few site migrations, and it does take some time for rankings to pick back up. One recent one that I worked on took about 3-4 weeks to get relatively close to where rankings were pre-migration. As long as you're positive you used 301 [permanent] page to page redirects and not 302s, the rankings should eventually get back to where they were. If you tweaked any of the titles from what they were previously, that could also have something to do with it. I would also hold off on creating a lot of geographical and genre landing pages that weren't there previously. Let Google have some time to crawl the site as it is without needing to constantly index more content. In the meantime, it may be worth working on getting some fresh links to the new site while the redirects/rankings fully take. Give it some time. Good luck!

Website Migration and SEO
Thanks Jeff! Your response was very helpful. It is true that the old domain contained a competitive keyterm which was lost in the migration. The competition is also higher for that space so this explains why we took a hit in PageRank. I will be working on regaining that competitive edge in the coming months. Thanks again! Sheena

Why Google is not showing right title tags of my website inner pages?
Hey Doug, Thanks for your feedback! I have checked different combinations that could be keywords of a particular page and it's surprising to see right title tags for some keywords and different titles for some keywords. My websites are ranking and improving! This is happening with Home Page of one website is well: metalrecyclers-brisbane.com.au! Tricky in deed! Thanks for your reply btw Regards

Keep Pages with Old Dates?
Just like having a blog on your site, old blog posts are still "worth it" to keep as old blog posts. If there's enough content on a page that's related to the past event, then I would keep that event page so it remains in the index. You're adding new content to your site, and perhaps adding photos from the event or other text/copy about the event would help and be useful to users who look at it after it's happened. If you have photos, then next year you can provide a link to last year's event, and that might be useful in future promotions of the event. If it's an event that happens around the same time every year (it's an annual event), then you might want to create a unique page or pages on the site just for that event. People search for the names of specific events in certain locations (i.e., New Orleans Mardi Gras) and you might be able to rank in the search results for that event name. In that case, I would probably not specify the year on the event page: or simply update the page every year with the latest info and the date of the event. If this is an event calendar and there's not going to be a lot of content on the event listing, then you might actually run into duplicate content issues or potentially Google "panda-like" issues for having a lot of low quality content on the site. You may want to go ahead and remove those old event listings and only keep current, future listings on the event calendar.

Website not being indexed after relocation
Nice catch, Lynn. That's got to be (at least the majority of) the problem.

How reliable is the link depth info from Xenu?
Hi Mike, Many thanks ro both you and Dr. Pete. I apologize for leaving both of your answers hanging here for so long. Both explanations made perfect sense and I totally get it now. Now it's just a matter of fixing some of those issues. I've know since coming on board here as an in-house SEO that we had some pretty significant site architecture problems. This is just another one to add to my "to-fix" list Many thanks to you both I really appreciate your responses! Dana

What is the ideal URL structure for a multi-language site?
Hi Jaan Yes that's right, you can use hreflang on the homepage also. I would recommend to use the links I provided to make sure the code is exactly how Google describes. I'm not sure what you mean by your second question but I would keep your category structure as follows: Category URL: http://dispak.ee/en/paperbags/ Product URL: http://dispak.ee/en/paper-product/ Doing it this way keeps the URL shorter and removes any issues with duplicate products under several categories. If you cannot do this then there is no major issue having the category name in the URL also, I just prefer to keep URLs short. I hope this helps.

Use "If-Modified-Since HTTP header"
Hi, It's a tricky one, I've looked in to this also a while ago for a site I was working on. I don't have a definitive answer but we went for another solution. Creating sitemaps and using the last_modified date element in there so hopefully Google would get when we last updated the specific pages.

SEO views on having other videos on our YouTube Channel
So, there's nothing algorithmic that would "flag" or penalise your channel as such and it wouldn't necessarily be "bad" for SEO as such, but I'm confused on a couple of fronts. Firstly, how you would include other's videos on your YouTube channel? Do you mean to just make playlists with other interesting videos included (this is totally fine), or are you actively going to upload other peoples videos? If so, would you have permission to use them? Secondly, why would you want to do this? Bear in mind that YouTube is generally a really really bad channel for anything sales focused or promotional. If you're trying to drive traffic and sales, you're almost certainly better off self hosting your videos rather than putting them on YouTube (more details here and here) and unless you're trying to get tons and tons of subscribers (not really a relevant strategt for an Ecommerce site) then there's nothing wrong with having a leaner channel that just has a few videos on it. In short - What use case is going to benefit you by having users watch other people's videos on YouTube?

Disavow Links Notification
It's a known bug that the disavow tool does not always give you a confirmation message after you submit. Around the 6:50 mark of this Webmaster Central Hangout John Mueller confirms this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoQxHeD-jZM As Dr. Pete said, as long as you see that your file is in place, you just need to trust that the tool is working. When you submit, you'll see a notification within the disavow tool that says, "You have successfully submitted a file with xxx domains and xx urls" to show you that your file has indeed been submitted.

Kill, pimp or cut loose? Ideas for a legacy ECommerce blog
In the interests of closing off the question, I've decided to keep the existing content on the same URLs and refresh the UI so it provides a better platform for hosting the high quality content. My rationale is that I did find backlinks pointing to some of the content which would be a shame to lose, and setting up so many 301s to a new location did not seem like a good use of time.

Duplicate content when changing a site's URL due to algorithm penalty
Hey Masoko - In the past, I've had luck with 410ing the previous site and putting a link from it saying that we've moved. This way, you keep any direct traffic by referring them, but you also don't redirect your pages via 301. Penalties pass through redirects. You don't want to keep both sites and duplicate content. I'd kill off the old site (it's only 6 pages, so that's pretty easy) and take the chance to, as has been said, refresh the content. Also, think about adding more pages to the site so you can rank for more longtail terms. Good luck.

How to track mentions with links using Mentions App
That's what I suspected! Sorry then, can't help as I don't have too much experience with mention.net.
