Dive into vertical-specific SEO tactics.

  • Hi Web Biz Ideas, This issue has been around for some time, and honestly, there is more speculation on this than a totally clear guideline. I highly recommend that you read this thread from the Local Search Forum in its entirety, including the last comment from Google MapMaker RER, Andrew Sawyer. Rather than re-capping all of this here, I think you should read the whole thing: http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/google-local-citations/1605-suite-vs-ste-vs-your-citation-addresses-2.html Sincerely hope this helps!

  • If it's always a planned action then I don't know. If none of the experts have noticed a difference then perhaps it doesn't matter. Maybe something to keep in mind in case one day things change. Thanks Miriam

  • Hey Miriam, Thanks for your help. So I wanted to know can I open G+ Profile with clients domain name emails, and then with G+ to claim Google Local+ listing, because to open Google Local+ Page for client you first need to have G+ Profile account which I know thay cannot be open with any other domain name mails expect Gmail.

  • Apparently there's a workaround for Canadian businesses: http://www.stepforth.com/blog/2013/get-listed-on-bing-local-canada/ Hope that helps!

  • Hi Bob, Good question. No, this does not matter. Consider the fact that when you conduct a citation campaign, the different indexes require different formatting in their submission forms. Differences like (111) 111-1111 and 111-111-1111 and 111.111.1111 are build into the system and, in my experience, Google has no problem in understanding these formats.

  • Bob, William and Chris have both provided great insight on this. Review velocity has certainly come up as a possible trigger for filters, but so far, citation velocity has not been investigated or pointed out as an issue by anyone I know in the Local SEO community. Does this mean it couldn't become an issue in future? I wonder about this. In the 10 years I've been working on the web, I have watched the rise and fall of directory submissions as a powerful tactic in traditional SEO. I am not sure if velocity had anything to do with that, actually, or if it was simply the Google decided that these types of links were not a great signal of relevance. Obviously, right now, directory-type listings are the core tactic of Local SEM, and it's hard for me to imagine that changing any time soon, though Google appears to be trusting social signals more and more as relevance indicators. But as to the specifics of velocity, your guess is as good as anyone's as to whether Google will, at some point, create a filter that relates to this. We'll all have to wait and see.

  • Hi Bede, Got it. No, I have not run into this or seen it reported. Very interesting. I think that might be worth reporting to Google via their data issues phone number, though I suspect they might tell you to merge the listings...in which case, I personally wouldn't follow that advice. You could try to call them about it, though: http://support.google.com/places/bin/static.py?hl=en&ts=1386120&page=ts.cs Wish I had more insight on this, but I've not seen it before.

  • Oh no it wasn't a judgement on you just odd that the question is so common currently. As if something happened where confusion was created on a mass scale. Anyway, no apology necessary it's a fair question.

  • Hi Bob, To be honest, I'm unfamiliar with the designation 'room number', though 'suite number' is highly common. To me, a room number sounds like something in a hotel or school. Is a room the same thing as a suite? I'm curious. At any rate, yes, if you are in a multi-business building, it is vital that your business is differentiated from the others with a number or letter of some kind. If your profiles and citations lack this, then the danger is that your NAP signal is being partially shared by other businesses. This could lead to duplicates, merging, penalties, etc., that could sap the strength of your listing. Your job is going to be to clean up as many possible citations as you can so that your business is correctly listed at the address (including the number or letter) at which mail gets delivered to your business. I highly suggest doing this: Yourself, manually. Hiring an expert to do this for you manually. I would not recommend using any type of automation in this situation as tools may fail to turn up all instances of listings with this NAP discrepancy. Create a spreadsheet, fill it with links to your citations, work to correct them and check them off the list when you see that the change has gone into place on the various citations. Lots of work, but worth it to secure and clarify your NAP signal.

  • Sounds good, Donovan. Just be sure the client meets all three of those points on my list of must haves: A physical street address (not a mailing address, PO box, virtual office or shared address) A local area code phone number (not a toll free number, call tracking number or shared number) Face-to-face transactions with customers. Wishing you tons of good luck!

  • Times these are a changing guys. Google just rolled out some new Google+ Page (which is where all Google Place Pages are going) updates. Apparently you can have up to 10 categories now, but none will be custom. This, however, is in the new Google+ Page dashboard. Your existing Google Place pages will be rolled into that soon and then your categories will probably need to be updated. I don't think Google said what they're going to do with your preexisting custom categories, but I wouldn't be surprised if they just disappeared. That's their way of getting rid of all those spammy categories.

  • Your guy seems very professional, we are setting up a different project. For local, I chose somebody else indeed but just for troubleshooting the pages..it seems I should have hired the other company to do everything.

  • Hi AllieMc, Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure what the status of the rollout of the new dashboard is at this point in New Zealand. In the United States, the top Local SEOs have been advising against merging for some time because the outcomes could be so wonky. Not sure if that is the same in NZ. Now, however, Google has rolled out a completely new Places for Business Dashboard. They way this will work will be that you can either just have a local-type page or you can upgrade the page to have the social features. Mike Blumenthal explains this well (http://blumenthals.com/blog/2013/04/02/google-local-rolling-out-places-for-business-upgrade/) "Once an account is transitioned the dashboard account will be automatically redirected to the new interface. If that account has a Plus account the option to edit the Google+ page will appear in the interface. But a G+ profile is not required to interact with the business profile. All that is needed is the existing Google ID/email. The business will be required to obtain a G+ personal profile if they want to add the additional features (social stream, videos) of a full G+ Local page. When this rollout is complete there will be only two types of local pages: verified and unverified. Each business can decide whether they need the social and video features or not." I'm not sure if this has rolled out in NZ yet, but if not, you might want to wait until it does to make any changes. Here is another good post by Mike explaining some of the features of the new dashboard, so you can be prepared: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2013/04/02/analysis-google-places-for-business-or-g-pages-lite/
