Which Link Strategy is Better: .edus or Blogs?
Quality edu links may be harder to get. But there are a ton of blogs on .edu sites with unmonitored comments. I don't think http://ask.buffalostate.edu/index.php?showuser=13006 will hold much weight in the engines, yet it's on an .edu domain.

When link building is returning little success, what is a good plan b?
Hello James It is getting harder. Certainly, speed isn't easy in a competitive market If your site is local there are many options If national or global it is harder. Try finding a few related blogs and offer a guest post that has a single relevant link to your site. Also do one press release each week, about something you are doing. Try to write something groundbreaking on your blog and then write a press release about it, then go to twitter and Facebook and other bookmarking sites and do a good post there. Find related blogs that allow comments, with a related post and comment on the story. Find strong related blogs that you can find contact details for, and email or (gasp)phone them to see if they are interested in collaborating and might link to your great story. Also ask them what floats their boat, so you can write other stories they will link to. That's a little bit more than being stuck with reciprocal links This should work for any site, if you have great content

Should you guest post on a site with no quality links?
It's not just about getting links to boost your rankings. Think about the potential referral traffic too. A great blog post on a site relevant to your niche can send you well qualified traffic that converts well. At the end of the day, it's not traffic the site needs - it's business. Also think about your positioning - If you visit a bunch of sites about fly fishing and see guest posts from the same person on just about every site you visit, you're going to think that they are more likely to be an authority on the subject. Just make sure the articles are good! Don't just cobble together a low value blog post just to get the link. Think about your positioning, think about the particular audience of the site and create something worth reading. If you've been offered a guest post then it's not unreasonable to ask a couple of questions about the site's visitors. What kind of thing are they looking for and how many readers of the blog are there? Even if you just get your name/brand in front of your customers, that can be a good thing. If you were given the opportunity to talk to a group of potential customers - how big would the group need to be to make it worth your while?

Risks with sharing my original content with other sites
Additional to the above points, I would suggest adding Canonical tag to the articles. For major articles you can also use Google Webmaster tools to request Google to fetch and index a page, you have a limited number of these requests, so used them wisely.

What does SEO Moz think about http://www.layeredlinks.com/ ?
What do we think about it? I'm sure 95% of people on here will agree it looks just like any other of the thousands of spammy link building services out there.

Text Link vs image link?
Text links pass far more link juice than image links. Having said that, remember you want a 'natural' linking profile - so don't be afraid to add a few image links here and there (just make the majority of them text based).

Paid Directories and On-page Keyword SEO
The only time this is an issue is if they type "horse buggy" into their address bar on browsers that default to putting ".com" on the end of any invalid URL. But since you're already stuck with that as it is, the next best thing is to whoop em on searches for "horse buggy".

No follow - dofollow
Hi Rand! I will try in the white hat way, with guest post! Is the only way to get some decent links. But you know sometimes I get angry, when I am working hard to build my links and the others are just passing me with some links...

Value of Link Redirect from Google News
I don't believe it will do you any good at all. The google link is better for them because they are linking to google, not to you. Google News uses a 302 redirect But there is good news and bad news too. The good news is that the link should always work The bad news is that eventually, it redirects to an internal google page with a link on it, that tells the reader you are an external site and they have to click that link to get to your story, introducing an extra click The page says: Redirect Notice The previous page is sending you to (your link is here) If you do not want to visit that page, you can return to the previous page. <- this is a link to google (if the readers put the URL directly into their browser, it is a link to that redirect page)

Stop Building Links During Reconsideration Request?
Thanks for the great advice both, much appreciated! That's an awesome post as well Carson, thank you very much for sharing. I think we are going to have to change our techniques - the point about link building formerly being the easiest part of your job really hit home with me. It seems that link building is going to be a much more laborious process. As far as agencies go, it's going to take a great deal more in the way of time and resources to service clients. At the moment, it seems that the only way forward for the average agency is to employ more staff or out-source elements of the link building process. Either that or SEO simply becomes much more expensive. With that in mind, do you think the days of local businesses ranking alongside high-street brands on P1 may be coming to an end?

No follow from a national newspaper
It's great to have a link to your site from a national newspaper, what an exposure! It is expected for the newspaper to mark your link no follow as they cannot vouch for your content however there is much value in the link being present. It is still a backlink which is counted and surely has a value somewhere in Google's complex algorithms. It is also a great 'natural' link to your site. As more weight is given to link profiles it would seem quite unnatural to have no nofollow links. In all, it's a great link to have - well done!

Hi Keith, Thank you for actually looking up the websites I was talking about. I think I am going to place the blog on the main url. Thank you!

Group of small business owners links to each other. Do they get slapped for Private Blog Network?
If you look at the kind of crappy sites BMR was putting up, and compare that to 30 legit business websites, you'll realize that no, nowhere near the same amount of risk is involved. Nakul is right though, just make sure it's part of a wider link building strategy.
