  • The linkbuilding section of the SEOmoz blog is a good place to look at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/link-building

  • If the site that hosts the links dies so do the links. If the page that the link points to dies so does the power unless you 301 redirect it to another page on your site. If this is the case you need to keep an eye on 404 pages in OSE or similar and if those pages have power redirect them

  • Hi Samuel, Interesting question. Let me add a little bit to lbi-tr's answer. A lot of times folks will buy old expired domains with high PageRank and try to use them for something else. If the links to these domains are on a part of the Internet that aren't very active, or hidden under layers of navigation, it's not uncommon to find little link data for them in Open Site Explorer. In this case here's what we can find out (sorry if this repeats anything) 1. The site was for sale in 2011, based on a capture from the Wayback machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20110202101214/http://osozo.com/ 2. Although OSE doesn't have any link data, Ahrefs shows some incoming domains, Most importantly is directory.supremohosting.com/, which 301 redirects to the site in question. This is likely where the PR 4 is coming from, and there is link data for this domain in OSE: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fdirectory.supremohosting.com%2F Unfortunately, the PR4 means almost nothing in this case. It's doubtful that the incoming link juice will help this site rank for anything at all. When a site changes hands and goes through major changes in content, search engines usually make the site "re-earn" it's rankings, despite what the toolbar PR says. In general when you guest post, you want to ask: Is it relevant to your audience? Can you envision these articles in a newspaper or magazine? Would you trust this site with your credit card? • I'm assuming you are removing links because you have an unnatural links penalty.  If so, if these links appear in your WMT list of links pointing to your site then I would attempt to remove them because Google still recognizes them as links to your site.

  • Actually it is quite easy for Google to understand if a directory is still a reliable and valuable source of information and what is simply another easy (paid) tactic for ranking. SEO Directories are easy to be discovered, as they declares quite easily their nature ("insert your site for better rankings..."), they offer link back as "paying option", they don't have usually incoming traffic (aka: users don't use them) and don't send traffic to the sites present in the directory. Also their cheapness can be taken as an alarm signal: 5 € is not really a sign of a real editorial control, revision and maintenance by the directory. Instead directories like Yahoo! still have a value, and - apart from having the trust factor of being Yahoo - it has a real editorial control and never mention rankings as one of the advantages of paying for being present in their directory.

  • Do you have sample URLs where the links are coming from? The site looks like a search site, and it's possible that the search results are being indexed by Google.

  • Sure. It make sense. You can and should suggest the page and yes, that will channel the Page Rank to that page so it will bring the needed SEO value. Google is on a big crusade right now related with links - you just need to be careful not to overdo anything (over optimization and so on) but if you keep everything in a natural way - you are safe no matter what.
