  • I'd agree with EGOL's suggestions for improving CTR. As far as expected CTR for position 5 in the organic results, the average is around 1-2% CTR. This is going to vary depending on the quality of the other results (your CTR will be inversely related to the quality of the other results). You will also have to consider what verticals Google is pulling into the SERP. Your CTR might be worse than average if shopping results are showing above your listing. You might also want to question the reliability of GWT impression and entrance data for the sake of testing CTR. In my experience the data they provide isn't accurate enough to come to a conclusion on the success of CTR tests.

  • Agree are you talking about a specific keyword ? It could make sense that an internal page would be ranking higher than a homepage on a keyword due to on-page content of the page.

  • Getting great links is the way to go, but that can be easier said than done. Primarily you want to attract natural links through the promoting content, but you can build links too. Have a look at these tools: http://www.seomoz.org/labs/link-finder/index.php and http://www.seomoz.org/link-finder

  • Hi John.  I've seen some websites that use a simple box that is "lightboxed" on top of the content.  When you click Yes, the lightbox appears and the content is shown as normal.  To a search engine, this would look like a perfectly normal website. However, if your "click yes or click no" refers the end-user to another page ONLY AFTER they click yes, then this would be a huge issue with search engines. I'd recommend using the "User Agent Switcher" in Firefox to view your site as a Googlebot.  This should tell you whether or not it's seeing the entire site or just a portion of your site: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/

  • I understand completely Steven. We are often in a position where we are trying to offer advice based upon a limited slice of information. We do the best we can with what we know, and we will arrive at different conclusions. Perhaps Jason will enlighten us further on his situation.

  • You do want to set up the 301 redirect. Ideally, you want one and only one URL for each of your pages.

  • this is why I'm glad EGOL is around when I'm not.  Not only does he really know what he's doing from an SEO perspective, he runs his own site - proof from real world stuff. Myopic SEO says "how little can I get away with".  Sustainable SEO says "What can I do to eventually dominate in this niche, and not have to play the games other sites do." 100 words?  Sorry - My recommendation to clients is 400 words on category pages, 1000 on information pages. 400 too much for you to swallow?  Start with 200 each.  Do other best practices SEO tasking - if you still find you're not getting the visits and conversions you want, write more high quality content.

  • If your tag pages are offering up some fresh content... either by their presentation that will get around duplicate content issues or fresh content of value to your visitors, then you should go ahead and leave them as indexable. If not, and you're in a fully-automatic mode with your template, I would suggest "noindex, follow" to provide more internal connections and to keep the link juice flowing
