Your thoughts on page navigation
On my site I had 117 links with sub-navigation and external links, ended up being way way way too much. There is another scenario too you could try that I was thinking of applying to my own site which is keep the navigation in place but put nofollows on the sub-navigation. I dont know the pros and cons this completely and maybe someone could say, but maybe you could use that so your link juice isnt diluted by minor pages and you direct your link building strategy to those pages that need it regardless of location. In your situation though (and I'm a novice), I'd be looking at the number of links you have and how diverse your sites PA/DA and other metrics. High links and not very diverse PA/DA (or profile that doesnt suit your current strategy) and I'd hide them. In mine, I have to try and get them to the site then I have to keep them there for as long as possible as it increases the likelihood they'll buy, so I turned off third level tertiary links so only primary and secondary links were present then watched the pages per visit and time on site. It didnt end up changing much. Maybe if the site isnt that old or well established or you can afford to experiment, build the site with all links turned on or a primarily UX strategy. Record user interaction over a couple of weeks and then remove that extra level of navigation and add it as a side bar or something that is only shows each section not the whole site on each page. Specifically on your question though you are asking about whether you should hide a menu or not, but Google doesnt care (correct me if wrong) about whether you can see it (it knows whether you can see it or not I think) its more its presence (they can tell its part of the navigation). I like hidden menus with obvious points of entry as it gives a less cluttered feel. The only issue is mobile. But then you server up a media specific css file and turn the drop down menu in to a select statement and you solve that one. Adam

tagged as duplicate content?
If the comments are appearing in the same page, you can set this page as canonical – _http://thankyouregistry.com/blog/remarriages-and-gift-registries/ Ref: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.in/2009/02/specify-your-canonical.html_

Does adding ™ help or hurt?
_It is perfectly normal to use - &trade and I do not think that it will make any impact on the visibility whatsoever. _

On-page report tool
Hi L E Nieto, First of all congrats on a no.1 ranking. The On-page tool gives recommendations for ideally optimised pages. This is often required for competitive keywords. As your keyword isn't that competitive, Google is just trying to find the most relevant page, which it thinks is yours. I'd strongly recommend that you do follow the recommendations from the on page tool to strengthen your position. How that clears everything up for you. Thanks Iain - Reload Media

Ecommerce - how many clicks from the home page should categories be
The goal should be the fewer clicks to get to the RIGHT item. (Which is subjective, for sure.) People will do more clicks to get to better data, however we shouldn't put them through any more clicks than needed - so, if you can do it in two, great, but if you need 3-4, then do 3-4. The one thing I have noticed is that (depending on how big your site is) more clicks to get to deeper content can make it harder for search engines to get in and crawl those pages, which can reduce ranking opportunity.

800 number on website
Hi Erin, Thanks for clarifying. Technically, this should not cause a problem for Google, but because of their history of issues with phone number confusion, when I'm optimizing a Local site, I put the 800 number in image text only. I don't include it in real text. I guess you could say I take a better-safe-than-sorry approach, just to avoid possible hassles down the road.

Need to hire an SEO consultant to fix my website
If you know nothing (or even a little) about SEO, I would start by reading SEOmoz's Beginers Guide to SEO. If you are still thinking about hiring an SEO firm to do the work for you, I would then watch this video from Rand Fishkin, our CEO here, to know what kinds of things to ask your potential SEO. Here is also 10 Questions to ask a Professional SEO and there is a link on the bottom of the post with the answers. Generally, if your site isn't huge I would recommend doing it yourself and ask questions here on the forum if you don't know the exact way, or best practice for something specific. If you don't have time to manage the SEO process, then I would definitely still read through the SEO Guide and make sure you understand the basics of SEO so you can have an intelligent conversation with whom ever you hire. I've learned from experience that you have know something about the area or you'll have the potential of being burned by the person working for you. Good luck!

WordPress - duplicate content
Brian, Frankly it is quite weird that you using great SEO plugIn and still have duplicate content issues. As far as I'm aware Yoast plug-in should add canonical URL's tag automatically if you have duplicate content on your website. Did you modified Yast plug in? - If yes - set everything to default. Changed it,s settings? - if yes - change everything to default. Do you use fresh version of it? - if no - disable, uninstall, download and reinstall it again. Best of luck! Jungles

Why is SEOMOZ Crawl Diagnostics not in sync with Webmaster Tools
Hi Anthony, Thanks for the question. I took a look at your campaign and those errors specifically and they are indeed duplicates of each other. I won't go into more details as this is a public question. If you want a few examples I'd be happy to start a support ticket for you. Essentially it appears you have a lot of pages that all have the same title and are all canonicalized to themselves so as far as our bot is concerned they are all independent pages. Why GWT would report differently than your sites actual information, I could not tell you. This issue is easily verifiable by visiting the pages reported as having the duplicates. If you'd like to discuss this in greater detail feel free to shoot us an email. help[at]seomoz.org Cheers, Joel.

Two Word Company Name (Combined to One) & SEO
Hi Ketan, One of our brands is "FrenchEntrée" and we rank for all permutations in Google - French Entree, FrenchEntree, French Entrée, etc even though we never separate the two words. 'French entree' is a term widely used and means a starter (of a meal) so it certainly can be done. I think the reason that we rank for both is because of the general keyword usage of the word "French" around the site, and also because of the domain reputation we have built up. If either of the two words individually in your client's name is considered a relevant keyword, then I think you're more than entitled to use it in places, on it's own. What will also help over time will be the back links from other sites. Some with write "Great Company", some "GreatCompany" and some "Other anchor text, from GreatCompany". This co-occurance will hopefully build up value for both versions of the brand name in search. I would suggest that you never de-value the brand by putting a space between the words - stick to the brand's real name and only ever use this. This will be best from a user's point of view, and eventually the search engines will catch up. Good luck. Matt

Does Title Tag have to be in the HEAD tag?
Hi David, Iain is correct that it must be in the head. No ifs or buts. Can you tell me what language or programme you are using for your website? There are pretty easy ways of making the page title dynamic based on the article title. Matt

Ecommerce category navigation structure -best practices
So in this approach, you're adding additional links rather than limiting the amount of navigational links that are allowed to be followed from the homepage. I'm one to believe that structure should be based less on link-juice goals and more on what will provide value to the user. You can use a variety of tricks to modify the flow of linkjuice, but I don't know of any tricks that modify the logic people use to find what they're looking for.

Google Indexing
Hi Nic, When you say that only 107 pages have been indexed, is this in your SEOmoz Crawl Diagnostics? It can take a week or so for all of your pages to be crawled fully, so don't panic too much. There are two ways are knowing what pages have been indexed by Google: 1. doing a "site:" search in Google e.g. site:mydomain.com. This will display results only from your web page. Take a look through and make sure all of your major pages are displaying. 2. Google Analytics (only if your site has been around a little while). Change the date range to all time. Then go to Traffic Sources > Sources > Organic and then change the primary dimension (which is a link just above the grid of results) to Landing Pages. The number of rows displaying roughly correlates to the number of pages that are ranked, and have received an organic entrant. Hope that helps. Matt

Too many forum posts - may I delete the oldest ones?
Thanks, Iain! Our case seems a bit more complicated (or more simple). Page loading time is very long due to the large amount of posts, so we must reduce the amount of comments.
