To many links on page and penguin
Generally keep your eyes open for sitewide links, keyword-rich commercial anchor text, out-of-context links (like a link for laundry soap on an auto blog) and anything that you couldn't defend to Matt Cutts.

Title tags for deep pages
You want to put your most important keyword at the front of the tag. Most important to least important and under 70 characters (including spaces). Each Title tag has to be unique. Since you already have a page about the Cheeses of the world The Cheshire Cheese page should begin with the keyword Cheshire Cheese. Also, since you already have a page called Cheeses of the world you could try using a completely different keyword that's similar to the keyphrases Cheeses of the world. Try and catch rankings for similar key phrases. Cheshire Cheese, Find Cheese from around the world. Brand I'd also recommend to not use | (Pipes) As Google see's those as stops. Its better to have a flowy sentence title tag. One last thing.. I LOVE cheese too!

Thin content and tabs on page
AWESOME idea! The powers that be would have been upset to take down the links, having them as nofollow will keep them happy. Once again, thank you very much!

Title Tag, Internal Categories, Long tail
I see, just optimize for smaller keywords. Right? Should I keep it to one keyword per category?

To follow or not to follow...?
Hi Jonathon, In general, outbound links are a good thing, and there's even a small amount of evidence suggesting that good outbound links can even provide a boost to your rankings (but never conclusively proven Worrying about outbound links generally isn't worth the effort, but there are exceptions. For example, if you're trying to rank for the keywords "red shoes" and the first link on the page has the anchor text "red shoes" linking to another page (either external or internal) then this keyword cannibalization can hurt the ability of that page to rank for it's optimized keyword. Generosity with outbound anchor text has a lot of value. I wouldn't worry too much about "leaking" authority, expect in the cases of keyword cannibalization described above. Others in the industry may disagree, and they are certainly entitled to their opinions and may even have some valid points, but I tend to see nofollows as a pain and only use them when you can't vouch for the editorial value of the link, such as blog commenting. My 2 cents. Best of luck with your SEO.

Does 'XXX' in Domain get filtered by Google
Hmmm... This is a hard one. (Oh man, did not mean to make the intentional sex referrence) Yes, Google has made changes in it's algorithm in the past year that makes porn harder to search for on the Internet. These changes don't filter the porn per se - except when "Safe search" is set to on - but it does mean that you must be much more specific in your search queries to find what you are looking for. For example, the query "boobs" generally returns almost no porn in Google, but the query "boobs porn" will. If I were building an algorythm to separate porn sites from non, a large amount of XXX in the incoming anchor text, or in the URL, would probably trigger it. Oh the other hand, I'm inclined to agree with George - seems like there's something more going on here. The backlink profile isn't terrible.... but there's definitely a footprint of comment spam in there. I won't link directly, but some of the suspect, off-topic links I found include: http://www.takarat.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=750&page=3 http://www.omyogapages.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43&page=7 http://www.atthepicketfence.com/2011/09/behind-blog-with-savvy-southern-style.html http://www.marypoppins-homesweethome.com/2011/07/what-is-it-with-us-girls-and-ikea.html These are pretty terrible It's possible that there's 100's or 1000's more we're not seeing, and these are causing either a manual or algorithmic penalty. My advice: Check with Google Webmaster Tools for any messages - especially unnatural link warnings. File a reconsideration request, even if you don't have any messages in GWT. Explain your concerns. Matt Cutts, the head of the Webspam team, helped write the original adult filter algorithms. He might take a special interest if you can get it to his attention. But mostly, what you're looking for is verification, or not, of a penalty. You may need to clean up the links. Do your best to remove any suspect links. Use the disavow tool as a last resort. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

On page link question, creating an additional 'county' layer between states and zips/cities
1000 links per page is probably too much. Google used to recommend having 100 or less, although their crawlers have improved a lot since then. It all depends on how high your page authority is, because that pagerank is going to be split between each and every link on the page. The more links you have on a page, the less pagerank each link will receive. If you have a really high authority page, this is no problem, but if you're a medium to small site, I would recommend against it. If you have a low authority page, Google may not even bother to crawl all the links on the page if it has too many. So yes, splitting up those massive pages of links into smaller sub-pages makes a lot of sense. Also, think from a user perspective what is going to be the best way to navigate your massive site.
