On Site Problem Caused Rankings To Drop?
Drop for all keywords and pages which have pretty much disappeared. Previously they were in the top 30 or so. I added a lot of categories for local counties but deleted them as they were just pulling content from posts and I thought I could run into duplicate content issues that way. They were only live for a few days. I submitted a reconsideration request and got an email back saying no manual penalty had been applied. I think it's a duplicate content issue. If you look at my categories I think they're too similar. No duplicate content warnings in webmaster tools though.

Google indexing page differently
No. Google will not index your page differently; however, it can potentially slow your pages down, because you will have additional code. Here is what Google has to say on the matter, "Where possible, use absolute rather than relative links. (For instance, when linking to another page in your site, link to www.example.com/mypage.html rather than simply mypage.html)." There are a few reasons behind this thought process: 1) crawlers cannot get confused when crawling your pages, because the complete path is available 2) should your site content be scrapped, the links would point back to your own page 3) if you have poor site structure, this can increase errors (for instance if you switch to HTTPS for a signin page and you continue to use relative pathing for navigation, you could then have links to the HTTPS version of your website and the HTTP version). Also, just for reference, when you are looking at using relative or absolute for canonical pages, Google states, "rel="canonical" can be used with relative or absolute links, but we recommend using absolute links to minimize potential confusion or difficulties." Hope this answers your question. Mike

Mobile website content
The emphasis on optimizing your mobile site should be the users experience. I know that sounds like a vage answer, and it is, but UX is important.

State Abbreviations and/or Fully Spelled Out?
"would the formats with the highest results (2400 & 3600) ALSO include all the results in the lower number formats?" The search volume information provided is Local Monthly Searches based on Exact Match. You can read more about Exact Match here: http://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2497825?hl=en "In cases where you want to mention the state, would presenting it like this be harmful?" Each time you add a new term to a title tag, you are increasing the page's relevancy to the new keyword at the cost of decreasing it to the previous keyword. Let's enter the theoretical world where all things are equal: Title 1 - Homes for rent in orlando Title 2 - Homes for rent in orlando fl Title 3 - Homes for rent in orlando fl | florida The problem with the 3rd option is it would never result in an exact match, which is the strongest relevancy boost possible. Personally, I cannot think of a scenario where I would ever use such a format. All things being equal, if a user search for "homes for rent in orlando" then the first title wins (i.e. ranks highest). If a user searches for "homes for rent in orlando fl" then the second title wins. The reality is this keyword is so competitive that anything short of a perfect match is not likely to get you in to the top 5 results. Homes.com, Trulia.com, craigslist.org, Realtor.com, rentals.com, ForRent.com, etc. These are the sites which rank for the term. In fact, if you don't break the top 3 results, then the local results push you so far down the page, you might as well not exist. When optimizing a title tag, the approach I take is to think as if I needed to rank #1 for the term. Once you achieve that goal, you can change your strategy and diversify. Until then...eye of the tiger.

Splash page - is it possible to rank well?
See if he'll let you do a 2 month test with a different home page and let him see the difference in the traffic/business and then let him make a more informed decision. On the other hand, the page that all your "home" navigation links go to should be a page like the one you wish your home page would be--a page with a bit more static content than the /начало/ page and one that other parties might link to instead of the domain's (current) default page. Develop your external links to that page. In the market you're working in, you better have real, link-worthy, thought leadership-type blog posts regardless of what's on your homepage because it's likely that the majority of your search traffic will land on your blog posts--at least until you build awareness and strength for your brand. Don't blame the lack of traffic on the boss' decision on the home page if you haven't pushed really hard for top quality content. If you've done that and he/she hasn't complied, blame the lack of traffic on their business sense, not necessarily on the web site.

Local Service Pages
Hi Allenrocks, You write: I suppose the solution is to become more creative about rewriting the same services. Yep, that's pretty much the solution. I know, for some industries, this is really challenging. For others, it's easier. Try to get the client involved as much as possible to discover ideas. Good luck!

Subdomain vs. Root Domain design
There's nothing specifically negative in it. How many Web 2.0 companies use blog.domain.com and link to it from the homepage? A lot. The question is whether is a good design. I believe, it's not. Different domain is a different domain. Why dilute the pagerank of the main site by sucking it into the subdomain when you can simply have /bog, /store, etc?

List of Google recognised abbreviations?
Indeed that is another question. I suppose it might if you use it as a second instance of describing 'x with y' in a page's text although the word 'with' is so generic in many instances that I'm not sure it would make a huge difference... I could be wrong though!

404 Error to homepage
try to nofollwo your login link and block your loggedin pages in your robots, so you'll almost prevent google to reach those pages. If you're able you can also noinedx your content.

How would you target alternative names for your product with the use of internal/landing pages?
At one point on a site I wrote a blog entry that was titled something along the lines of, Other Common Names for Our Products. I came up with a list of about 10 other names products were referred to as. I then used 1 day for the next week and a half writing a post about each of those names and explained why people referred to those products by those names other than the official name. Some of the posts I had to be quite creative to come up with unique reasons, but it was kind of a fun exercise to go through. You might try something like this.
