Although, I can't see whereabouts it is on the page.
Our client's site is one of those on the second page with decent DA/PA. Only today have I actually noticed the removal of some spam EMD sites from the search that were infiltrating the results. The keyword is probably a lot more competitive than you may think.
Ok, so I'm sure you get the gist of what I'm asking about in my question.
The query is 'diy kitchens' in Google UK and the website is kitchens4diy[dot]com - which is ranking in third from my viewing.
The thing is, the site has just ONE BACKLINK and has done for a good while. Yet, it's ranking really well.
What gives?

I've noticed that one of our sites have seen some considerable ranking drops for competitive keywords at least a week or so after Penguin was introduced.
I've attached an image to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about. We were ranked around 2nd page for each of the phrases but plummeted to 80+ (although, there has been some movement back towards 50).
I mention Penguin but that really shouldn't have been a factor with this site as it's a relatively new one and all the links have been built naturally.
Any help appreciated!

The .com links were built initially when the site was intended to be a .com. Would you recommend trying to change these links to .co.uk - would it be beneficial?
I definitely take your point that, from a consumer's point of view, it's probably more beneficial for the /kitchens/ page to be ranking. With that in mind, do you think it would be wise to concentrate link building efforts towards that sub-page?
When you say a "waiting game", do you mean weeks? Months?
We've now returned to page three for the keyword.
Oh, and it may be worth mentioning that for another competitive keyword, we have a second page ranking and that one is the home page.

The links we've built have all been carefully sourced and managed in a way that there should be some good variation in anchor phrases while steering well clear of underhand techniques like mass paid directories.
Never link to the home page? Can't say I've heard that one before. Why would the ranking be suppressed?
Hey Ard. The site in question is an ecommerce one so it has very little text on both of the pages. In fact, it has more on the home page.

I was wondering whether any of you Mozzers out there could shed some light on this query for me.
Currently, one of our clients is ranking (on the second page, at least) for one of their target keywords.
However, it's not the home page that is ranking - it is a sub page. I guess you could say both are targeted to rank for the keyword in question but the home page has a considerable more PA (+10) and has a lot more incoming links so it's a little bit baffling as to why the sub page has been given an advantage.
Does anyone know why this may be?
Also, on a secondary note, should I continue to build links to the home page or target this particular sub page to have a better chance of ranking higher for the keyword?
Any advice on this welcome!

Just an update on this; after removing the footer links we're still seeing a downward movement for one of the most competitive keywords that we were ranking on the first page for.
As I mentioned in my last message, a couple of days ago it dropped to third page and now it's on page 8! Should we be looking at a reconsideration request even though we didn't receive an actual warning from Google?
Google can preach all they like about lessening the weight of EMDs but fact is they still have massive prominence. As long as it's not too long, I'd go for the EMD.
We've now managed to remove the footer links that were incoming from the website I mentioned.
Any advice on the next stage of the process? Or is it just purely a waiting game? Should we submit a reconsideration request? Will we be able to see any immediate changes?
To give you an idea of the scale of the ranking dips; the site was originally floating around 6/7/8 for a competitive keyword but has now dropped to the third page.
I didn't have them circled previously. But I do now.

Often you can get a feel of the quality of a website from just looking at it.
Does it look professional? Would you be proud of hosting your content there?
Another thing to take into account is the user interaction that a website receives. A website may have a high DA but if the articles have no comments or social shares then it's unlikely the content is particularly credible. On the other hand, sites with lesser DA but interaction through comments and social shares is much more appealing to me.
It's definitely pulling the latest update from the website's Google+ page.
Just tried it in a clean IE browser and it shows me the same too.
