What does this kind of rel="canonical" mean?
In an ideal situation, the method where you just code the variable into the canonical tag string can work, however it can also lead to problems if the coding framework is not properly planned out or if an upgrade to the system has a bug in it. I've seen situations where page_uri doesn't function after a system upgrade. Best practices dictate that you need to ensure the full non-appended absolute URI show up at the source level on a live page so testing is critical if you're going with that option, and be aware of potential unanticipated breakdowns. It's all about what is seen on a view-source or seen the way Googlebot sees it.

What Does Penguin Recover Look Like?
Being Penguin a link penalty, once you clean the "infected" link profile, then the recovery should quite fast after the penalty is lifted. Said that, cannot be addressed a black or white kind of answer, because if the links eliminated were representing the biggest % of all the links, than the site won't jump back to the old traffic volume for the simple fact that it misses now those benefits those links were offering until Penguin. But if the % wasn't huge and new better links had been created while eliminating the bad ones, then it is possible to see traffic having a steep recover as the one shown in your analytics. Said that, this is just my opinion based over what I've seen, hence don't take it as it was the rule

What do you when the wrong site links to you?
While I'm certainly not engaged in any form of blackhat techniques, we were severely affected by Penguin. Needless to say, we suffered a 50% drop on April 24 and have not risen back since. For that reason, yes, I do have link paranoia - good term I'm thinking of making another post on the subject (YouMoz) because I've finally figured out what happened. I'm hoping this next update will catch my fix. For the record, they are not spammy but rather topical sites and directories related to Ghosts or New Age stuff. Again, we have nothing to do with these topics. Seems like the consensus is just leave them. There are about two dozen out of 2000 links I manually reviewed in a spreadsheet.

Will a 303 redirect hurt us?
David, I noted no one had responded to this and wanted to provide my best shot. First, there are those more experienced at membership type sites, but originally the 303 was used to prevent a form resubmission after an HTTP Post request. Your question made me think of the recent SW Airlines problem with multiple charges to same card for one purchase - I wonder if they needed a 303? For your 'problem,' I would think that the answer would be A, but that you could use B considering that there is no data to be resubmitted. I cannot see where either would be deleterious to anything. I hope this provides a bit of help,

Google Places Missing Listings
Without knowing exactly what is happening, you may want to create a post on the Google Maps Help forum which they have in place for exactly these issues. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/maps?hl=en Are you doing anything with the keywords or anything like that? I have had entries get declined, but they usually still appear on the account. Posting to that forum is your best bet as those folks are sharp and Google will respond and they can look in the back end.
