Patrick Sexton is a pretty well known "tool" dude in the SEO world - I think if I remember correctly, he was David Mihm's original partner for the getlisted puppy... Funny, we had that self-pointing canonical tag since July 8th - just removed it less than a day ago as we thought it might be harmful. So, that means that it didn't help as it was there all the time.

Thanks Keri, though it still shows as answered to me. We've submitted a reconsideration request and still waiting for any reaction. The situation hasn't changed yet - still same positions, same wrong pages.
