Http to https what should one look out for
Hello Murray! Do you have any specific advice for sites on Shopify? It seems they made the decision to move to https in 2016 and just leave a swaythe of small site owners to sort out redirects etc after it happened Sorry, i've little to none experience in Shopify. Can't help here. One 'gotcha' that I keep finding is with backlinks. When the site moves to https, backlinks that were previously set up to point to http are not recognised as backlinks on https, which appears to impact backlink profile and domain authority on the new https version. Does this make sense? Therefore, all the old backlinks need to be changed to point to https. Is this correct? Here there are 2 points make. On one hand, if the redirection to https is done correctly with a 301 all the backlinks will point to the last page. On the other hand, IF, only IF, you have some way to change the URL in the backlink, it could be a nice idea. I'd prefer assuring a correct redirection rather than changing the pointed URL in old backlinks. Remember that non-google backlink profilers (such as Moz, ahrefs, magestic or others) will take some time in collecting all the information in the HTTPS site. That is simple it is a whole new site/page for them. I typically use the Traffic Control app to redirect URLs, but they seem to use relative links. So how do we redirect http to https? Don't know how large and/or complicated is the site. I do handle (or say to the IT team to handle) the redirection strictly with 301 redirection rules. Most of them with some sentences in the .htaccess file or with a plugin if Wordpress is used. Hope i've helped. Please feel free to ask more if i haven't answered you or if I haven't explained well. GR.

?_escaped_fragment_= Duplicate error in Webmaster
Hi Taiger, You can find instructions on how to do this at https://www.google.com/support/webmasters/answer/1235687 The menu itself is found at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/crawl-url-parameters You'll just want to enter escaped_fragment when they ask parameter, and answer "No" to the questions regarding whether this changes content on the page.

What Metadata should one use multi country directory
I'm assuming you include these tags for Facebook's benefit, because if you want to send localization signals to Google, it's better to use hreflang. Hreflang allows a comprehensive range of countries and languages: you can combine any two values from the ISO-639-1 list of language codes and the ISO-3166-1 Alpha 2 list of countries. The locales supported by Facebook are a lot more limited. You can't have en-IT for English speakers in Italy, for example, because Facebook doesn't support that value. Facebook only allows the following English-language locales: UK English: en-GB US English: en-US English (India): en-IN English (Pirate): en-PI English (Upside Down): en_UD You can see Facebook's full list of supported locales on this page. So the answer is that it won't matter where your users are. What will matter to Facebook is the style of English you use. If you write in British English, you should use en-GB, and if you use US spellings then use en-US.

Duplicate content issue: staging urls has been indexed and need to know how to remove it from the serps
Thanks for helping Malika! To clarify for other readers, blocking in robots.txt after the pages have been indexed will actually prevent them from being removed from the index with a meta noindex tag, since Google won't be able to crawl the pages to see the noindex tag. If staging URLs have been indexed already (and assuming they still need to exist), here's the steps I would take: Add meta noindex tags to every staging URLs If urgent, also do a URL removal request in Webmaster Tools (but this is usually not needed) Wait until the staging URLs are noindexed - you can check periodically by doing site: searches in Google. Only after they are noindexed, block Search Engines from crawling them with the robots.txt file.

Hi Kristen Thanks for the heads up.. I have found the cause... Wordpress v. 4.4, on my test site i rolled back to 4.3.1 and it all works fine. So I think it must be an issue with the plugin which has not been updated to wordpress 4.4 Thank you for your help.

Wordpress sidebar dropdown url ?cat...number issue
Hi Taiger. I'm assuming the sidebar widget is linking to ?cat=9 instead of /category/category-name/. It seems like this is a relatively uncommon issue. The simplest fix would be to use a list instead of a dropdown. If that's not an option, you could look into hardcoding a dropdown menu yourself instead of using the widget code. You'd need to open up the source code, fix the incorrect links, and paste that HTML back into a text widget. Hope that helps, -Kane

Looking for help with my website
you're off on a tangent here....let's not do that...my comments referred to the 'why' not the cause.... go to the 'recommended' list and pick a few to vet....then get a deal and they will undoubtedly do that complete web audit first to see where you are and why... all else is rhetoric here....time to get the tasks started, eh!
