Duplicate content based on filters
Hi Leonie-Kramer, Thanks for this, I was leaning the way of canonicals, but will try out the URL parameters first as I think this provides a great way of telling google that the content is filtering for users, but thanks for the answer, will go this route if Google still see to be struggling with Duplicates.

Organic search data not representative of site Authority, need advice
Have you done a back link analysis of the domain to see if the previous domain owner created an unnatural back link profile that still exists? Maybe the back links from the previous owner are about terms not related to your content and it is throwing off the site categorization. Sometimes it just takes time to get back up and running after a big change like that. I see your old site still has 2,200 pages indexed in google - https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS503US504&ion=1&espv=2&es_th=1&ie=UTF-8#q=site%3Aaaholidays.co.za Did you add the new site to webmaster tools and submit a sitemap?

Duplicate content and rel canonicals?
Hi, I have to agree with Devanur-Rafi. If both of the sites are serving the exact content, although Google have the power to do whatever they want, they'll most likely take the rel=canonical into consideration and display the page the tag is pointing to over the second site. So, yes it is a dream to display both site with the same content in the search result and by using the canonical tag, Google won't penalize both sites and display the preferred site. That's my 2 cents. Thank you!
