When to use canonical urls
Thumbing up both answers - I think they've got you covered. This is definitely a situation where you should try to sort out why the deeper page is ranking. It could be a positive that you should try to encourage (disrupting that could harm your ranking, ultimately) or it could signal something about your home-page that needs work. Rand had a good post a while back on the subject: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/wrong-page-ranking-in-the-results-6-common-causes-5-solutions

Is Zemanta Still Safe
Looking at some Zemanta links in the wild, it doesn't seem too aggressive. Take for example, the bottom of this blog: http://kevinwmccarthy.com It depends on your goals. From a traffic perspective, as long as the links are relevant, it's fine. I can't tell you whether Zemanta will drive traffic to your particular site (I haven't used it), but it's certainly plausible. It probably depends a lot on your niche and the population of sites using the system. From an SEO standpoint, my gut reaction is that it's fairly low-risk but may also be low-gain. Google could easily recognize these plug-in links and simply devalue them. I doubt a block of four relevant links is going to get outright penalized - it's more likely Google will just see this as a link-exchange of sorts and simply dial down the volume on those links. That's not to say it's risk-free (we've certainly seen many link networks get hit in the past year), but I suspect that John was speaking in generalities and not about Zemanta in particular. On the other hand, no tool like this should be seen as some kind of panacea for link-building. It's just one piece of the puzzle for getting exposure and traffic.

Use Of H1 Tags
I wouldn't worry about 2 H1 tags if that's how the page works naturally. It's more important to structure your headers in the correct order, so don't have a H2 before you've had a H1, for example. See Google's Matt Cutts on the issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIn5qJKU8VM HTML5 might be changing things as there are more tags to specify page sections. You probably don't have to worry about that yet though.

Should I remove the Jetpack Plugin From A SIte
Yoast's is an SEO plugin, Jetpack is quite broad and varied (and not really SEO focused at all) in what it offers, so I don't believe it's an either/or decision. See: http://jetpack.me

Site Cleanup Operation
Thanks so much for the reply. I agree about the headline posts, I will more than likely delete them as there would be no links to them, only like 50 links to the whole site according to ose. Wrt the links, the site is a mess and requires restructuring which I think I am going to have to do. Thanks for the help. Paul

When Should I approve Pingbacks
Hi Propertyhunter, I recommend that you only approve pingbacks from websites you trust. Use SEOmoz tools to determine a site's Mozrank/Domain Authority, and I agree that you should delete pingbacks from your own domain. Using a related pages plugin is a better choice for inter-linking your content. Hope this helps! Chris

Question Regarding Inbound Links
You're very welcome Paul! It's a very important question and had we not seen Penguin, my answer may have been different. It just shows how much that update changed the SEO landscape.
