Hi everyone, I know this thread hasn't been active for a while but i'm looking for an answer relating to a similar issue. Our infrastructure team had issues a few weeks ago and were routing bot traffic to a slave server. This obviously flagged up 403 errors in webmaster tools. Having removed the traffic diversion our site hasn't been indexed in the three weeks since serving Googlebot with a 403 response. Does anyone have experience of Google delaying reindexing of a site after experiencing a 403 response? Thanks

Every document I have seen all agrees that canonical tags are followed when the tag is used appropriately. The tag could be misused either intentionally or unintentionally in which case it would not be honored. The tag is meant to connect pages which offer identical information, very similar information, or the same information presented in a different format such as a modified sort order, or a print version. I have never seen nor even heard of an instance where a properly used canonical tag was not respected by Google or Bing.

Our site uses the "+" and is has never hurt our rankings - we've held many #1 positions in Google.  If I had to start the site all over again I'd use the dash instead but if you have pages that have been around for a while I wouldn't worry about it.

This is a basic configuration issue. I would advise you to contact your sitemap software vendor or whomever wrote the code. You need your sitemap software to view the "www' version of the site as those are the pages which display the links.
