in webmaster tools 404 are going gradually down for desktop and now suddenly going up for mobile for pages that are not linked to for months.

If the links are nofollowed automatically by the sites' content management systems, they should effectively be ignored by search engines. That said, search engines most likely at least take into account where your nofollowed links come from, and it won't look good to have a large number of nofollowed links from spammy sources. Of course, these aren't spammy sources. If the links are followed, they pass PageRank, but can also attract low-quality commenters (who don't care if a post is 48 hours or 48 weeks old). You might leave a good, constructive comment as the 4th comment on a post with a followed link through to your relevant site. Comments one, two and three might also be high quality. However, if the links are not automatically nofollowed by the CMS, spammers can and will end up adding endless comments to the thread with their spam links in the future. This isn't great for your site, as it means you're linked to alongside spam and thus part of a bad link neighbourhood of sorts, despite that not being your intention. Having a selection of comment links should not hurt the site, but do be wary and very selective about where you post these links. Because comment-based link development was such a heavily-spammed tactic (and still is for some people), you need to be very careful about how you link in this manner, even if it is not for SEO purposes.

If you are showing the content to only your own URL dependant on how your accomplishing this Google would be none the wiser. I have applications which cannot be seen by anyone who isn't on our IP. Done the right way Google wouldn't see it either!! Unless of course you work for Google!

Vadim, thanks, but article is mainly about crawl bandwidth concerns. My concern is not crawl bandwidth, but link juice flow.

Actually I don't think it exists any public list of meaningful directories per country. Said that, apart very very few, almost every directory is at least partially penalized or doesn't pass pagerank (because it was cut off by Google). So... sincerely, I would think in another link building tactic

I agree with Extimaseo, it's your own personal preference. Somehow I would use the noindex in this case instead of the canonical tag, because you are able to add a unique description later on.

Hi There, Simply re-ordering your content is not going to make it any more unique. I've seen mashing up content help sometimes (depending on how trustworthy the site is) but changing the order of the same phrases doesn't add to the uniqueness of the page. Honestly, the results probably aren't worth the time required to do this. Good luck! Geoff

I'm not sure I get what you are asking. You mention products but also mention hotels. Can you share exactly the issue you are facing? Facebook is not meant for just loading products or hotel locations. It's more about sharing things they are doing over time or having a facebook page for each hotel location. But if you are talking products, take a look at what ModCloth does. They mention their products in really interesting ways that drives traffic to those pages.

Thanks a lot everybody for your input. In order to make the decision it would be great to learn more on how google determines the topic of an ecommerce site. Many of these potential factors should be relatively easy to test, by watching ranking changes after additions of new product segments to a site. Did you ever see any article/post on the topic or did you notice yourself drops of rankings after adding a limited number of new product segments to a site? Main factors could be: related keywords on index page/title percentage of products with related keywords percentage of links from external topical related sites Anything else? By considering these, I could increase likelyhood that google considers my site relevant for all 3 segments. So maybe by offering just a limited number of 3 different product segments, disadvantage for ranking on keywords may not be so significant compared to single topic site.

Hi Andrews, While the difference between dashes and underscores use to be a big issue a few years back its something that seems to hold minimal merit now. The two can be used rather interchangeably without any major impact. This was phased out around the same time as exact-match-domain value was as far too many people were abusing the long-tail dash page method.

One other thing to think about - do you have another method for your the bots to find/crawl your content? We robot.txt all of our /search result pages - I agree with Everett's post they are thin content and ripe for duplication issues. We list all content pages in sitemap.xml and have a single section to "browse content" that is paginated.  We use re="next" and "prev" to help the bots walk through each page. Also, make sure each page has a unique title and description, I just add Page N to the standard blurb for each page and that usually takes care of it. If you close one door on your search pages, you can open another one using pagination! Cheers!

thanks: I tried it. Buzzstream identified about 25% contact emails of the list. In the end I did not find a way to export the email adresses out of buzzstream. I contacted support but now after 1 week no repsonse.

thanks. On first sight could not find any other reason for disappearance in rankings, but will have a second look. Relevance of aggregate review on category is not so black or white. I believe that it adds some value to know aggregated reviews by brands for example, but other people may question this value.
