Former tenant Google Map listing still displays
Hi Kevin, Very sound questions. Google's way of dealing with this is the permanently closed label. There are businesses all around me that shuttered years ago and are still searchable, but bear this label. So, at least for the present, this is what they feel is an adequate solution to the fact that businesses close. Google does make some efforts to hide permanently closed listings, but they are still discoverable if a user searches for the name + the old location. What can be a problem is when businesses don't actually close, but simply move from an old location to a new one. When they do this, there are steps they should take to avoid having their old location labeled as "closed" because some studies have indicated that this can harm their future rankings at the new location if they continue to use the same phone number as was used at the old location, as well as signalling to customers that the company may have gone out of business. If you own retail properties with tenants who move rather than closing, a nice thing to do for them would be to teach them how handle GMB so that they don't end up with that "permanently closed" listing. I outline how to do this in the "permanently closed" section of this blog post: https://moz.com/blog/delete-gmb-listing Might be something to bookmark for future reference!

Google Beacons
Here is the message I received from Google: **Beacons transmit small bits of data like a random number or unique URL roughly once per second. These signals are readable by BLE-compatible devices, like smartphones and tablets, within a limited proximity range. Apps with the appropriate Bluetooth permissions can read these signals and perform actions. ** Beacons are an interesting new technology that will generate useful customer experiences and insightful analytics for your business. There are many reasons to participate, including: Store Visit Insights - Report on consumer behavior such as how long they spent in store & where they are going next Store Visit Integration - Signals for Google provided beacons will be utilized as an additional input to store visit reports as soon as they are installed How does this actually work? BLE beacons give users better location and proximity experiences by acting as digital lighthouses. They effectively “mark-up” (or tag) the real world for mobile devices to understand and use. For this store visits pilot, BLE beacons will be used to provide more precise indoor location “tagging” in situations where GPS does not work well (e.g., within a shopping mall). The user will have location history enabled and Bluetooth on for BLE beacons to register and inherently improve our store visits model.

Use a National Brands name in your content
In my opinion, all the keywords related to a specific search, add value to it, and the more keywords you mention related to that search, Google considers that you are covering more about that field, which is positive. In fact, I personally use to analyze the most mentioned keywords by the sites on the first positions on SERP's in Google, usually the top 10, and try to include all those keywords in the texts of my website, or a important part of them, as long as there is a natural and logical way of mention them, this includes brand keywords.

PA Score of 30+ to get Google Features
I agree with Nigel here, there is no correlation whatsoever that is connecting featured snippets to Page Authority in what way. It's a metric setup by Moz (this product/tool) and it could be that many pages on your site aren't even in their index. I would focus on creating the best pages and making it easier for a search engine to understand the content, which you can do through for example structured data markup and verifying that, that data is still correct.

Instructional Videos on Separate Websites
Hi Kevin Yes, this is absolutely the right method. You won't rank for the video on the two pages with the canonical but I guess you have a reason for this but cross-domain rel-canonical is the correct way to do this, I would also consider transcribing the video on the important page too for maximum SEO juice. Regards Nige

Drop in Traffic
Lots of people have problems with redirecting old URLs to new URLs, making sure they are done properly, making sure that none were left behind, putting them in the right format and order in the .htaccess document.

Ignore SEO and traffic/calls dropped
Yes, it was a bad decision to hire a website design company. I have since taken the site away and built it on a custom platform.

Google Answer Box
Hi Kevin, I agree with Patrick that you're at Google's mercy. The one correlation that we have noticed is that sites appearing in the answer box are typically in the first 5 SERP results for the question you are answering. If your site isn't in the top 5 yet, I'd work on some internal & external link building to get it there. Good luck! Adam

Google's Presentation Yesterday
That's interesting there are only two Google partners in Charlotte, NC. I would imagine there would be more in a larger city. According to search engine land, the side and bottom ads account for roughly 14.6% of total clicks. Ads on the top position targeting the same keyword etc gets on average 14x higher click-through rates than the same ad on the right side. Since ads appear at the bottom of the page only less than 7.3% of clicks are being impacted by the change. Searchengine land also states that as a result of these changes position 3 got the biggest boost in click through rates. I think the percentage of traffic coming from Google would vary widely depending on strategies used to acquire traffic for any specific website. Bruce Clay talks about some of the effects on organic traffic the removal of the right-side ads had on search traffic. Personally at my agency we have seen similar results in some of the PPC campaigns we run for our clients. We haven't noticed any negative impacts and in some instances have seen an increase in performance.

Multi-Locations Business Internet Presence
Hi Kevin! I apologize for not noticing your thread earlier. Don't know how I missed it! You are describing so well what happens when a multi-site approach begins to get out of hand. While you could, of course, run 5 different websites, the long term health of the brand is likely going to be best served by consolidation, with proper redirects being set up from the old sites to the new umbrella site, and citations being corrected to reflect the change of URL. You'll likely want to dedicate good resources to earning some new links, while you're at it, to the main site, to strengthen your hand, and a dedicated review acquisition campaign would be smart to throw into this mix, too. Could you lose rankings? Yes, it's possible, but you can mitigate this as much as possible with proper redirects. The major benefit of consolidation will be that, going forward, every single action you take will go to strengthening the brand, rather than you having to slice that up 5 different ways. Your goal will be to become the dominant player in your city for everything you do with an incredibly powerful website backed up with a unified marketing plan. I do recommend going with folders rather than subdomains. It's simpler. Hoping you'll get some other opinions from our community, and that this one helps. Wishing you luck in the work ahead!

Custom HTML or WordPress, it's Time to Decide
Did you decide on a platform yet? this was posted months ago, and was curious to your decision. Other mozers are recommending Shopify. I"m a WP girl myself, so I lean that way. Just curious as to the final verdict.

New Website & DA Score
Hi Kevin! I just want to confirm that DA is a link metric—it's almost entirely based on your backlink profile. The best way to bring it up is to build high-quality links.

New Website
I think the biggest and most important question you need to answer is: Does it do what you want it to do? You need to make sure it converts a user once it's on the site, that the user can navigate through the site well. That's the top priority that people seem to neglect, they focus so much on rankings that they forget a user actually needs to land on the site and fulfill the goal of that site.

What Website Platform would you use?
Dmitrii Yes it helps a lot, your opinion is valued. My designer has evolved with technology and he offered both custom with minify abilities as well as WordPress (which I'm not in favor of). He makes good points about both, but really want to hear from my Moz Community before we make the plunge later this year, early next. Thx

WWW.mydomain.com and .mydomain.com
Awesome, you should see those dupe errors go away on your next crawl report! It looks like you chose the non-www route, in that case, you'll want to update those canonical tags to point to the same.
