What are the best practices with website redesign & redirects?
Hi there Here are some great resources: Web Fundamentals (Google) Multi Design Layouts (Google) The Basics of Search Engine Friendly Web Design & Development (Moz) Designing for SEO (Moz) Information Architecture for SEO (Moz) The Process of Web Design: From Discovery to Prototype (Moz) I would also make sure that you focus on user experience not just from the design aspect, but the content aspect as well. Here's another great resource on that. When you are ready to move your site, make sure you review this resource from Google, as well as this migration guide from Moz. All of the above should help you get started - make sure that you review with your web development team and review the following on your current site: All KPIs that matter most to your visibility / performance Your site's goals over time Google Search Console performance over time (impressions / rankings) Take a look at your competitors Check your on-site SEO Check your backlinks Check your content Check your information architecture Learn more about your audience Are you capturing your audience at the right points? Do you have content to do so? Are you doing everything you can do develop your brand(s) right now? Sometimes it may be a matter of a redesign and not a new site overall. There's a great Whiteboard Friday that touches on elements of this topic called Should I Rebrand and Redirect My Site? Should I Consolidate Multiple Sites/Brands? Hope this helps! Good luck!

This is kind of a trick question, but if you could only do ONE thing to improve your search ranking what would you do?
Definitely blog. If written well and focused on topics that are interesting and relative to your keywords they can be a huge marketing tool. I am currently working on a site that has just 7 backlinks and the only marketing we are focusing on is blog, we have managed to obtain p1 rank under around 15 medium competition search terms in the last few months. However I would stress that the content has to be good quality, original and informative for it to have any ongoing weight for SEO.

How do you put together a link building strategy?
If you are asking that question, the best way to get started is to look at what your competitors are doing. Find every backlink they have in Open Site Explorer (group by domain, external links only). Usually you can find a lot of gold, like awards and sponsorships you weren't aware of, that your business can apply for. Do this for every competitor. Beyond that, link building is often done through link baiting. You can get some traction through a small amount of comment link building and directory listings at some of the major directories. Guest posting is probably the most actionable form of white-hat link building you can do. Once you feel comfortable enough, you can start contacting related websites about adding a link to your website. This might come about as an incentive (a discount in your store, if you have one, as an example) or be paid outright. You can get these for free, I've found, if you engage the website owner in conversation first. Here is a good post on contacting website owners: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/outreach-letters-for-link-building-real-examples-14902

How do you avoid getting hit for too many links with an ecommerce site?
Hello JH, The "100 links" rule doesn't really apply these days, and I'd personally remove that from the SEOmoz report if it were up to me, but some people still like to see it. I wouldn't worry about it, though you may want to focus on more important and higher ROI issues like getting a couple sentences of useful, static content on category pages.

Does having a file type on the end of a url affect rankings (example www.fourcolormagnets.com/business-cards.php VS www.fourcolormagnets.com/business-cards)????
The bad things about programming extensions, php, pl, asp and others are: - that you are telling people the code on your site - that you are adding one more thing that people need to remember - you are obfuscating your link name As josh says, it doesn't make any difference to the search engines, but the lack of the extension is cleaner.

Would you say it is more bennificial to seperate keywords in the title tag tag of a page using a common ( keyword , keyword | Domain.com) or using a hyphen as SEOmoz best practices reccommends (keyword - keyword | domain.com)?
I agree with Ryan. In addition, if you are using commas, make sure it reads well. There is nothing more that looks unprofessional than bad grammar.
