Very risky. I wouldn't do it.

RE: Up to my you-know-what in duplicate content
You've pretty much confirmed my suspicions. I can set the redirects up myself, its just been about 5 years since I've done any SEO work. What I meant was should I mod_rewrite or "redirect 301 /oldurl /newurl" ...I've forgot a lot of stuff that I used to do with ease. My own sites were always started off right and weren't as bad as the one I'm working on now, so I'm in unfamiliar territory. Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it

RE: Up to my you-know-what in duplicate content
Thanks I appreciate the advice. So you don't think having 2 seperate domains pointing (or redirecting) to each other occasionally will hurt anything? I have like 1000+ URLs I need to redirect already on the completely separate domain.com, as for the keyworddomain.com forum I don't think I need too many redirects as just one from seperate.domain.com to keyworddomain.com, and then one there from nonWWW to WWW should fix all the broken URLs right? When you say 301 do you mean "redirect 301" or mod_rewrite? Thanks for the help

Up to my you-know-what in duplicate content
Working on a forum site that has multiple versions of the URL indexed. The WWW version is a top 3 and 5 contender in the google results for the domain keyword. All versions of the forum have the same PR, but but the non-WWW version has 3,400 pages indexed in google, and the WWW has 2,100. Even worse yet, there's a completely seperate domain (PR4) that has the forum as a subdomain with 2,700 pages indexed in google.
The dupe content gets completely overwhelming to think about when it comes to the PR4 domain, so I'll just ask what you think I should do with the forum. Get rid of the subdomain version, and sometimes link between two obviously related sites or get rid of the highly targeted keyword domain? Also what's better, having the targeted keyword on the front of Google with only 2,100 indexed pages or having lower rankings with 3,400 indexed pages?
Thanks.

RE: Multiple 301 redirects considered a redirection chain?
Yeah I might have to seek help on the magento boards.

RE: Multiple 301 redirects considered a redirection chain?
There are both indexed and internally linked urls that need to be redirected properly. Using two CMS's WP and Magento and I'm not too much of a php wiz so I really am not following. besides the product pages still being linked there are like 1000 more 404 pages that need to be redirected to the homepage. Would mod rewrite be better here?
And Barry, yes I guess so, just found out about it, trying to understnad wth is goin on here. Looks like mage redirects a couple times on its own as well? Who knows, it's puttin me to sleep lol. Hopefully I can find out more tomorrow. Thanks for the answers guys +1

RE: Over 1000 pages de-indexed over night
It could take a couple of days before you see results, Google has to step back and reassess most likely, or your web developer has no clue what he's doin haha.

RE: Multiple 301 redirects considered a redirection chain?
No trouble I'm quick with the mouse. That's why I like doin this stuff around 4am haha. Thanks anyway Barry.
You might be onto something, it's magento which I have limited to no knowledge of how it redirects, I'm sure that's the deal I'll look into it but after I need sleep soooo tired

RE: Multiple 301 redirects considered a redirection chain?
redirect 301 /store/index.php /store
redirect 301 /store/electronics1 /store/electronics
that's pretty much it

RE: Multiple 301 redirects considered a redirection chain?
Error 310 (net::ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS): There were too many redirects.

RE: Broken Inner Links - Tool Recommendations?
I might be wrong, but I think Google WMT can accomplish this with ease. I'm looking at 1000 right now. Externally you'll probably have to use xenu =/

RE: Multiple 301 redirects considered a redirection chain?
Yeah there's certain cases, sometimes all, where /old will go through the first /index.php redirect to be able to get to /new
Yeah I guess you have a point, but for some reason it feels wrong. Google hasn't crawled this site for almost a month lol. So when it finally does, everything's gonna be so different it might just be like AHHH.
Thanks for the help.

RE: Link Building: Feel like ive hit a wall
I agree. It's also always so hard to rank against those older domains. Stay consistent, diligent, and try to break some bigger stories. Keep on writing the articles, and get as creative as humanly possible to get those stories that bigger sites want to link to. Reach out to as many site owners as possible to form a small group that you can fall back on when distributing your content. And like Martin said, definitely leverage community on your site, and maybe even UGC/contributors to help write the articles. Good luck!

RE: Is the copy-paste function under tynt.com SEO friendly
I don't think they need to circulate their content anymore as it's highly distributed already. I'm also not completely sure about this, but I think google ignores the pound # tag. As it's so commonly used as an anchor and for ajax/javascript. Try searching # in google

RE: How can I update On Page Optimization Reports following 301 redirect?
Aw, yeah you may have to make a new campaign, but don't take my word for it.. you've been here longer than I have haha. Good luck Tom

RE: Google Places optimisation for service franchise, 150 franchisees with no physical addresses?
Wow, I'd say your ideas are pretty good, but they're getting wise to stuff like this. I guess they want the name to actually mean something lol. You could possible use the private mailboxes and have them forwarded to the central location, but I really have no experience with this. Good luck though whatever case!

RE: How can I update On Page Optimization Reports following 301 redirect?
You may be forced to export keywords, and start a new. I'm not 100% sure about this though. Have you given it enough time to update?

Multiple 301 redirects considered a redirection chain?
I need to redirect a ton of duplicate content, so I want to try
redirect 301 /store/index.php /store
redirect 301 /store/product-old /store/product-new
redirect 301 /store/product-old1 /store/product-new1
redirect 301 /store/product-old2 /store/product-new2
redirect 301 /store/product-old3 /store/product-new3
redirect 301 /store/product-old4/file.html /store/product-old4/new4/file.html
and then a whole bunch of old dead links to homepage.
So we've had /index.php redirected to / on other parts of the site for awhile, and for the most part /store is a friendly URL, but then we have tons of dup content and work arounds that preceded my job here. I'm wondering if those redirects above would be considered a redirection chain? Since the all the redirects below the /index.php -> /store count on that one redirect.
Thanks for any insight you may be able to give!

RE: What is the difference between Bing and Google ranking factors ?
Rand Fishkin did a study on it. It doesn't have a lot to do with on-page factors, but more with keywords in the domain as well as a having lots of diverse in bound links. Read about it more here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-vs-bing-correlation-analysis-of-ranking-elements
