If you canonicalize the damaged product back to the original product, the damaged one won't be findable in search anyway, same as if you had deindexed it. In either case, people could still find it on your website. And are you sure you cannot change the canonical? This support page seems to imply that you can.

Depending on how your site is designed, you could just upload images and use them for place holders with pinterest. What you would have to do is upload the images, then add open graph tags to the site. With them you can make the pages show up what ever image you want in both facebook and pinterest. Disallow in robots would work - especially if the JS is actually rendering a pop up PAGE not a snippet existing on the page. If possible, I would prefer the use of Rel Canonical on those pop up pages - Google is funny sometimes and indexes URLs if you dissallow them in robots.

you can set up a CNAME record to be used with CloudFront on copyfaxes.com. It could be something like images.copyfaxes.com if you are only using cloudFront to serve images. I serve all my media content and scripts via WPEngine's CDN and use a CNAME to suggest all the content resides on my subdomain eg: cdn.bestpremiumthemes.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Input-Form-Designs-100x65.png
