Recent Algorithm Change
Mmmhhh, We're seeing a similar effect in competitive search in Sydney, the term 'website designers' brings up relatively weak sites, few if any of which appear to be optimised for that particular query though they are for closely related searches. Has G vastly reduced the influence of backlinks and turned up the over-optimisation filters?

Ranking under a non-geobased, one word phrase
If I understand correctly you want to have a top result for those keyword within your area as opposed to one of the indented "local" results right? Assuming that is what you mean, doing a quick local search for "locksmith" and "locksmiths" what I notice for the companies that rank above the local indented results are either larger companies that are not local (but have a local service) with high DA and PA. Also the other results are skewed toward EMD and place so "placelocksmith" or "locksmith-place" or "locksmithsinplace". The local results have stronger DA and PA, but without EMD/PMD so for example"tonyslockbusters.com" etc. So, look at the google results and see what differentiates those top listings from the non top listings If I am misunderstanding...let me know and I can try and help

Content not being spidered
Fantastic. I appreciate all the help. If it's showing up in the search for the content directly than I'm not too concerned. I'm curious though as why every tool I tried gave poor responses. A second tool someone in the office had tried gave a similar response. http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/search-engine-simulator.shtml?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rocksolidroof.com Is it just something with the template that reads off for spider simulators?

Getting Listed in Google Places
Hi Greg, As Edward has correctly stated, anything other than an actual, physical address is not what Google 'wants'. That being said, there are tons and tons of such listings in their index, but even a cursory glance at Google's spam fighting history over the past two years is a big indication, at least to me, that they are more committed than ever to upholding their guidelines and weeding out anything they consider to be violating them. So, honestly, it might well be possible to get away with something like this for a month, a year, three years, etc., but taking such a risk means a day of reckoning would be looming over the business ever day and the business owner would never know when to expect their rankings to suddenly tank. At present, Google is still very much allowing home-based businesses in their index, providing they hide their addresses, so this is probably the most common solution in what I'm assuming is your case. And if you feel concerned about publishing your home address anywhere, here is a list of directories that also allow you to hide your address, and this can help you with your citation building: http://www.localvisibilitysystem.com/2012/08/13/can-you-rank-well-in-local-google-without-revealing-your-street-address-anywhere/

Yahoo & Bing algorithm changes?
I've noticed some serious changes on Bing and Yahoo SERPS for my company in the last month. Not sure if this is what you experienced. Our traffic hasn't really decreased, but our tracked keywords have dropped off for some reason or another.

Reviews not showing up in Google Places
Hi Stephen, Yes, this is very much a known problem. If your clients are involved, first step for them is to report their issues to this thread in the Google and Your Business Forum: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/business/0f1Cu9yLIzY/J21OJDPL1NUJ[1-25] This thread was started by Google Forum Top Contributor, Mike Blumenthal, to consolidate all of the complaints into one place for review. So, go there and list each client separately (or have them do it themselves) with documentation of what each is experiencing. Additionally, here is a blog post on this topic from Joy Hawkins that I think will be helpful to you: http://imprezziomarketing.com/seo-blog/google-maps/a-way-to-avoid-the-google-local-review-spam-filter/ Also, if any of your clients happen to be in the auto dealership industry, be advised that Google appears to be cracking down on reviews in that sector with especial vigor. See: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2012/08/08/what-should-you-tell-a-client-when-google-loses-their-reviews-a-4-part-plan/ Hope these resources will help you feel up-to-date on this issue, and maybe even help you resolve your client's troubles.
