I definitely agree with the keeping focus on one domain - it can just be frustrating seeing low quality sites with pretty much no banklink profile ranking on the first page.

@irvingw, I agree with most of your feedback. remember you don't need to fix everything wrong on your site before filing for reconsideration While this could possibly be true, the reconsideration request form is very clear. The only check box requires the submitter to confirm they have read and understand the Google guidelines, the site currently meets those guidelines, and the site will adhere to the guidelines going forward. I would not recommend submitting a reconsideration request unless you had some level of confidence that all issues on your site were resolved. Based on the wording of the original question, I think Daniel wanted to find out if a penalty could be removed from a particular page of the site without Google reviewing the entire site. Since Reconsideration Requests are subject to human review by the Spam team, anything is possible, but the policy is set up to be a site review.

Perhaps not THE deciding factor - and yes I agree that the backlinks are perhaps of a higher strength/quality - but surely the domain name still plays SOME part in the overall ranking of the site? Or is this something that used to be effective and that's why people bought up domain names that matched their highest traffic keywords?

Depends how competitive, but around 3 days if you're lucky and the search matches Usually I only see our stories in there for 1 or 2 days tops, but then again smaller and smaller sites run with the story and our results get replaced with the same story but more recent updates. If you become the authority on that story (ie, lots of links and references) I would imagine you could stay in there for longer, but alas, never seen it.
