That content is duplicate content, yes. However, it's more important to have a decent amount of unique content on each page than it is to worry about how much duplicate content is on each page. Duplicate content isn't the end of the world if each page has substantial unique content, which is the first explanation I'd put forth in why you're still seeing those other domains ranking fine. This is how you'd strike a balance between having useful duplicate content and pleasing search engines. Regarding having too many products to write unique descriptions, unfortunately you're going to have to bite the bullet on that one if you want to rank better. It might seem unfeasible for you to write all of those, but writing them one by one or hiring a writer to rewrite each one in batches is going to be essential to you ranking well.

I try to keep my related products in the same category, because the way I see it when someone is looking for a wedding dress, they rather see more wedding dress suggestions than jumping to accessories. The accessories may be added to the suggestion on the checkout page (I'm looking into that at the moment). I'm going to take crusader's advise and ask different opinions and do some testing to see what works better. Thank you both for taking the time to reply.

I agree with Tom. Using images several times is quite common on the web and penalizing for this wouldn't make any sense. But I disagree with the fact that Googlebot cannot see images. Google's image detection is quite advanced by now and they can definitely see if an image has already been indexed (even just comparing the checksum already gives good hints). Also, Google's "search by image" shows us that this is technically possible.

Better setup your blog on same domain. Example http://www.bridalhotspot.co.uk  - Magento http://www.bridalhotspot.co.uk/blog/ - Wordpress Updates on blog - new post every 2-3 days. For your market it not hard because you can post news not only about your own clothing but about celebrity wedding etc.
